10 days in Iceland

10 days in Iceland

We had been waiting to come back to Iceland for 4 long years. This year we planned to focus on the southwest and the inland region. We already knew Iceland well, but in recent months we had picked out many sites that we had not seen, hikes that we had missed during our previous trips, and we had planned to do another day in Landmannalaugar because it was probably one of our favorite sites in Iceland.

We decided to leave for 10 days, with a trip from Reykjavik to Snaefellsnes, then to the Husafell region before going down via Kaldidalur and arriving in the region of Landmannalaugar and Kerlingarfjöll.

Then we headed south to the Westman Islands and finally to Laki. We tried to improvise on certain days to be able to adapt to the weather, which be fickle in Iceland, even in July!

Regarding the vehicle, like the last few times, we rented from Blue Car Rental, this time a Dacia Duster based on their advice regarding our itinerary and the significant probability of having to cross a few fords.

We left Geneva in the early afternoon via Icelandair for an expected arrival at 03:50PM in Keflavik. The temperature difference stung a little bit since we left Switzerland with a temperature around 35° to arrive in Keflavik's 10°!

After collecting our luggage and getting some cash at the ATM in the airport, we found our Blue Car Rental hand-over agent kindly waiting for us in the hall to take us to the agency located 400 m from the airport.

The BCR agent gave us some advice about our itinerary, and we started filling out the rental paperwork. He also explained to us that the agency was open 24/7 and that all we had to do was come to the airport agency car park on the day of departure to check and return the vehicle.

The Dacia Duster was quite new and seemed to be in very good condition, and once the various papers were filled out, we left at 5PM local time to our guesthouse located in the center of Akranes.

Around 6:30PM we arrived at our guesthouse Kirkjuhvoll. The host was very friendly and pointed us to a nearby bar/restaurant for a meal. After a walk in the city center and along the beautiful Akranes beach, we decided to go to bed to be ready for out first day on the ground.

Here was a very approximate outline of the planned route:
