The East of Iceland region offers fjords, small fishing ports, and hiking, lots and lots of hiking. It is full of historic charm and very sparsely inhabited. The points of interest are countless and the landscapes wild and a hostile beauty, and it is in the eastern fjords that you will find the sunniest microclimates.
Two of the most famous and visited fjords in this area are <a title="Seydisfjorður" href="/guide/east/seydisfjordur">Seydisfjorður</a> or <a title="Bakkagerði" href="/guide/east/borgarfjordur-eystri-bakkagerdi">Bakkagerði</a>. <a title="Viknaslodir" href="/guide/east/viknaslodir">Viknaslodir</a>'s hiking trails are also some of the most renowned in the country.
If you came to see <a title="Reindeer in Iceland" href="/wildlife/reindeer-iceland">reindeer</a>, well this is the only place to see them in Iceland, and if you came for the snowy woods, the <a title="Hallormsstadur" href="/guide/east/hallormsstadur">Hallormsstadur</a> forest is one of the few on the island. The <a title="Stuðlagil" href="/guide/east/studlagil" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stuðlagil</a> Canyon, discovered in 2017, is also not to be missed!

Seyðisfjörður is a beautiful, quaint fishing port with its modest 750 inhabitants, located on the banks of one of the longest fjords in eastern Iceland.
The Seyðisfjörður fjord extends for 17 kilometers and offers an absolutely exceptional view down the winding valley. It is simply one of the most visually-striking fjords in Iceland and one of the jewels of the East Coast.

Hedged in between two superb mountains, the Strandartindur and Bjólfur, this place has a lot of charm. Going down Route 93, the views of the fjord with its vivid contrasts are simply exceptional. The road there over the mountain is often shrouded in mist before arriving in Seyðisfjörður valley where the blue sky opens up before you, a truly unforgettable experience.
Unsurprisingly, Seydisfjordur's main sector is fishing, especially herring, and fishing boats can be seen sailing back and forth down the fjord. The coming and going of Norröna cruise ships bring a lot of tourists and indeed bring the city to life. The ships disembark their passengers on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, which is when the Seyðisfjörður craft market is held.
Seydisfjordur is known for being an artistic capital, and not just for music. Indeed, after Reykjavik, this town has the most art galleries and design shops than any other in the country.
The small light blue church (Bláa Kirkjan), inspired by Norway, is the symbol of this village. You will also spot typically Scandinavian and therefore very colorful houses, their reflections shimmering and dancing on the water, making this port one of the most picturesque in the country.
<h2 id="aller-seydisfjordur">How to get to Seydisfjordur?</h2>

This fjord is all about the dramatic entrance. Whether by car or by boat, it is absolutely unforgettable when you come into view of the village completely surrounded between the Strandartindur (1010 m) and Bjólfur (1085 m) mountains. And Route 93 is studded with exceptional viewpoints, allowing you to photograph the village from above.
In winter the drive is magnificent but the road there is regularly closed, which further isolates the small village. Also the fact that it is surrounded by relatively high mountains means Seyðisfjörður has very little light in winter.
There are numerous waterfalls along 93 to the small port, including the beautiful Gufufoss, and it is not unusual to see a few foxes on the way.
Seyðisfjörður can be reached by sea by ferry company Smyrilline, which is the only company currently offering travel to Iceland by boat from Denmark.
You can also reach this quaint port via road 93 coming from Egilsstaðir which is another gem of the <a title="eastern fjords" href="/guide/east/east-fjords">eastern fjords</a>.

The fact of having these very regular tourist arrivals in summer means Seyðisfjörður can be busier than you might think, given how remote it is from the main sites along road number 1 and the largest cities.
From Egilsstaðir it takes less than 30 minutes (27 km) to reach Seydisfjordur. The city <a title="reachable by bus" href="http://www.visitseydisfjordur.com/project/local-bus-schedule" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">can also be reached by bus</a> via line 3 of the SVAUST company, which serves the Eastern Fjords.

For a drink, we recommend the Café Lara near the church which serves local craft beer that is top shelf.
For lunch, the Skaftfell Bistro is also a great find with an original decor where you can wine and dine in the middle of a library.
The village offers camping locations between May 1 and October 30. The rate is 1650 ISK per adult. The campsite is right in the center and very well located to enjoy the best view of the fjord.

<h3>Visit the village</h3>
The small and picturesque light blue Bláa Kirkjan church is the main attraction and even sometimes hosts music events during the Blue Church Summer Concert. The city's beautiful emblematic place of worship is then transformed into a concert hall for classical, blues, or jazz music. In fact, there are many concerts during the summer holiday period between July 1 and August 12.
<h3>Art and culture in the center of the small port</h3>
The LungA festival takes place every year in July and brings together artists from all over the country to celebrate the arts with performances, various exhibitions, and other events.
Art-lovers will enjoy the Seydisfjordur Visual Arts Center, one of the country's top contemporary art museums that offers numerous exhibitions.
The Toekniminjasafn Museum, near the port, will teach you a little about the history of fishing in eastern Iceland.

Kayaking in Seydisfjörður
<a title="Kayaking in the fjord" href="/experience/kayaking-iceland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kayaking in the fjord</a> is a very popular activity for tourists in summer, and there is also horseback riding (or bike rentals if you prefer) along the banks of this stunning fjord.
In winter, you should know that there is a ski slope in Seydisfjordur! Indeed, the Stafdalur resort is located along route 93 above the village.
A number of hiking trails are available, running up the flanks of the two mountains that surround Seyðisfjörður, from short hikes on the heights of Seydisfjordur (<a title="Seydisfjordur hike" href="http://www.visitseydisfjordur.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">more information here</a>) to a multi-day expedition that is part of the famous <a title="Trail from Borgarfjörður Eystri to Seydisfjordur" href="/guide/east/viknaslodir" target="_blank" rel="noopener">trail leading from Borgarfjörður Eystri to Seydisfjordur</a>.
For the bravest, if you complete a specific trek known as the “Seven Peaks” you will go home with an official certificate naming you a “Viking of the Seyðisfjörður Mountains”. The goal is to scale the seven mountains that surround the fjord in 24 hours, including the highest, Bjólfur. To complete this adventure, you can find a detailed map at the village tourist office.
In the mountains above Seyðisfjörður, you will find a surprising concrete sculpture named Tvisongur, which was signed by a German artist named Lukas Kühne. When it gets windy, you realize the sculpture is in fact a wind instrument, but it's worth the walk just for the fantastic view of the city. It's easy to find, just a 300 meter walk in the direction of Skálanes from the parking lot in the town center.
After 20 minutes of fairly easy uphill walking, you will see the 5 concrete domes of Tvisongur, the smallest being 2 meters high, the highest being 4. Each dome has its own resonance that corresponds to a tone, and together they create a five-tone harmony that is at the heart of the Icelandic musical tradition. You can even test this using your own voice. Here, the view of the harbor and the fjord is truly unparalleled.
Finally, at the far end of the Seydisfjordur fjord is the <a title="Skálanes Nature Reserve" href="/guide/east/skalanes">Skálanes Nature Reserve</a>. In addition to its magnificent landscapes, bird-watchers will be delighted by the reserve's large colony of eiders.

Seyðisfjörður Village and its Fjord

It's no secret that there are very few trees in Iceland. Forests are a rare sight, representing 0.5% of the territory. Despite major reforestation efforts made in recent years, the landscapes are generally quite free of trees.
It's a good thing Icelanders have a good sense of humour regarding the almost total absence of trees in Iceland:

Quite amazingly, trees once covered nearly 25% of the island's surface, but the early Viking settlers completely razed the expansive birch forests for construction lumber and toolmaking. It's quite a struggle for trees to grow back in the harsh Icelandic climate, so reforestation efforts have been slow.
<h2>Hallormsstaður forest: the largest forest in Iceland</h2>

The Hallormsstaður forest (Hallormsstaðarskógur) is actually the only forest in the country that's actually worthy of the title It's obviously become a natural reserve, but also Iceland's first National Forest. The 20th century saw numerous reforestation programs launched and maintained admirably to such an extent that today, the region has more than 12 million trees across 54 different species.
Located in the East of the country, 25 km south of Egilsstaðir along the shores of <a title="Lake Logurinn (also called Lagarfljót)" href="/guide/east/lagarfljot-logurinn-lake" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lake Logurinn (AKA Lagarfljót)</a>, this forest covers more than 2,300 hectares along 18 km of this beautiful lakeside. Several car parks located along the shores of Lake Lagarfljót will connect to various hiking trails that cross this beautiful forest.
<h2>Hallormsstaðarskógur hikes</h2>
As mentioned, there are numerous hiking trails in the forest to be enjoyed on foot but also for incredible horseback riding excursions. And various campsites along the lake also offer boat rentals, which is a great activity to enjoy with friends and family on Lake Lagarfljót.

One of the best known is the blue taril, The Knolls, which is 5 km long and climbs from the old School of Economics (now a guest house in summer), past a rocky outcrop known locally as the “Old Woman”, and through the forest to the north.
The path traverses the unusually-named “Flat Forest”, a huge birch forest, before continuing to the Falcon Cliffs which offer a panoramic view of the entire forest. The return trip takes you downhill through a spruce forest to a clearing that was once the Ormsstaðir farm, and from there back to the starting point.

Hallormsstaður forrest

Road 94, in eastern Iceland, in Egilsstaðir, takes you north to the remote Borgarfjörður Eystri fjord. Egilsstaðir is more than 75 km from this fjord, and in fact, the long and winding road is up the nearby mountains is a rather bumpy one.
<h2>Borgarfjörður Eystri: one of the most beautiful fjords in Iceland</h2>

Frequently forgotten by tourists because of its remote access (150 km detour to/from Egilsstaðir), this fjord is nevertheless one of the most beautiful on the whole island, famously featured on the EDEN (European Destination of Excellence) list since 2012, so you know it's the real deal.
Surrounded by the splendid Dyrfjöll Mountains, which rise to 1136 m, and the superb rhyolites and liparites of Hvitserkur, the place a hiker's paradise. The fjord itself is very beautiful and the panoramas are simply unforgettable.
<h2>A hiker's paradise</h2>

At the tourist office in Egilsstaðir or Bakkagerði, you can also get a very good map of hiking in the region. Many of them leave from Bakkagerði or very close by.
Some are short hikes, just a few hours, while others are multi-day treks, such as the one at <a title="Víknaslóðir" href="/guide/east/viknaslodir" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Víknaslóðir</a> which goes from the Seyðisfjorður fjörd to Bakkagerði in 3 days (70 km):

For tourists with only a few hours to burn, one of the most enjoyable hikes in the region is probably Hvituhnjukur. This trail is no longer than 2H30 - 3H. You have to take the F946 track for about 2 km to find the departure point at the car park (listed as hike number 10).
After less than 30 minutes of walking you arrive at the beautiful Urðarhòlarvatn lake, just follow the signposts. Further on, the surprising ridge of Hvituhnjukur rises with its stone flanks.
The path then leaves the stream, so you have to go north-east to find a possible ascent, here it is rather poorly indicated. Once at the summit, you will have the chance to admire an exceptional view of Breiòavik Bay, the hike then makes a loop that allows you to go back down to Lake Urðarhòlarvatn.
Another very fun hike to do from Borgarfjordur Eystri is the trail to Brunavik Bay. On the road leading to the Bakkagerdi port, a small car park and a sign indicate the start of the hike. The path is marked with yellow pegs and climbs for 1H towards the Brunavikurskarð pass.
The path passes between the two mountains named Granipa and Geitfell, and from the summit the view over the fjord is simply magnificent in good weather. The path then goes back down to Brunavik in 30 minutes. The return is via the same path and it takes a total of 3 hours to make the trip back and forth between mountains, fjords and green meadows.
Finally, very close to Bakkagerði, the <a title="The Storurð hike" href="/guide/east/storurd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Storurð</a> trail is a must-see in the region.
<h2>Things to see in Bakkargerdi</h2>

In addition to the ocher and pink rhyolites that give the fjord its famous contrasts, photographers will be delighted to see that Bakkagerði is also home to an adorably photogenic puffin colony on the edge of its cliffs.
To see them, you have to go to the end of the road where there is a staircase that leads to the shelf above the port of Borgarfjordur. From here <a title="The puffins" href="/wildlife/puffins-iceland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">puffins</a> can be observed up close.
The region and its cliffs are also ideal places to observe the <a title="Midnight sun" href="/experience/midnight-sun-iceland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">midnight sun</a>. The magical twilight produces surprising colors and contrasts along the rhyolite mountain flanks, and lighting up the colorful roofs of Bakkagerði's houses.
At the end of the day one has to enjoy a break in the very original and superbly decorated Alfa Café, which offers particularly delicious Icelandic cakes. The “Álfa Café” is decorated with stones, in reference to the “Elf Rock”, Borgarfjörður Eystri, home to the queen of the Icelandic elves resides according to local legend!

The Borgarfjörður Eystri Fjord (Bakkagerði)

The Hengifoss waterfall is located in east Iceland on the Brekkuselslækur stream, west of the famous Lake Lögurinn and its legendary sea monster, the Lagarfljótsormur.
It is in fact the Hengifossá river that flows into Lake Lögurinn (and the monster's lair).
At 120 m in height, the waterfall is the 3rd highest waterfall in the country, after <a title="Glymur" href="/guide/west/glymur" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Glymur</a> and Morsárfoss in <a title="Skaftafell Park" href="/guide/south/skaftafell" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Skaftafell Park</a>. This means you can even see it from Road 931 about thirty kilometers from Egilsstadir.
Hengifoss is also considered to be <a title="The most beautiful falls in Iceland" href="/experience/most-beautiful-waterfalls-iceland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country</a>, and together with <a title="Dettifoss" href="/guide/north/dettifoss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dettifoss</a>, the top ranking falls in the East.

Most visitors to Hengifoss pass through the small town of Egilsstaðir. From here, you'll have to take Road 931 heading south along Lake Lagarfljot.
30 km later, as you reach the end of said lake, turn right again on the 931 to cross to the other shore.
Finally, at the end of this road, take the 933 left and the waterfall car park is a few hundred meters further on.
The hike starts from this car park, where you'll see indicated some useful tips for this hike, as it is very often the case in Iceland.
<h2 id="rando-hengifoss">The Hengifoss hiking trail</h2>

From the road you might get the impression that the waterfall is only a few steps away, but that trick of perspective is a mirage, and it's a long climb to get there.
From the car park get ready for a short hike and even if it's not very far (about 2.5 km), the elevation is 270 m and the terrain is hilly, so your calves will definitely feel it.
Count about 1H15 to reach the foot of Hengifoss. Some passages are muddy, and you'll have to cross a few small streams to reach it.
From the car park it's very well indicated: a few steps lead to a path that runs along a stream on a green plateau, and you can't miss the huge waterfall.

The trail to Hengifoss is very pleasant, a bucolic scene with grass and flowers all around you.
<h3>Pit stop at Litlanesfoss</h3>
Halfway through (1.2 km from the car park, a 30-minute walk) there is another fall, more modest in scale but still magnificent: Litlanesfoss. The striking basalt columns that surround it were formed by cooling lava.
Litlanesfoss, also called Stuðlabergsfoss, is nearly 30 meters high, and the fall falls cascades over two levels.
You won't believe the sound of water breaking within the basaltic organ, which is essentially an arena. There are small paths down into the canyon to take a closer look, but the descent is slippery, so be extra careful. To reach the main fall from Litlanesfoss, the path gets a bit steeper.

Depending on the time of year, you may have to hike across more or less mountainous areas.
You'll reach Hengifoss 45 minutes after leaving Litlanesfoss. You can get very close to Hengifoss, but it is often windswept so you're bound to get a bit wet! Photographers often find spots a little up the road just before reaching the fall for better views.
The walls have red and black hues that give a magnificent effect to the waterfall, and the red strata are particularly vivid with the bright northern sun in the Icelandic sky.
The Hengifoss waterfall is known especially for these strata of red clay rock sandwiched between layers of basalt. The basaltic strat are 5 to 6 million years old and come from volcanic eruptions in the Tertiary period.
The red bands are in fact sedimentary and the red color is created by the oxidation of iron in clay. Another black and red striped landscape well known in the region is the <a title="Strútsfoss and its hike" href="/guide/east/strutsfoss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Strútsfoss waterfall with its hiking trail.</a>
The descent to the car park takes you back the way you came and only takes half an hour of very pleasant walking along the Hengifossa stream.
The view of <a title="Lake Logurinn (also called Lagarfljót)" href="/guide/east/lagarfljot-logurinn-lake" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lake Logurinn (also called Lagarfljót)</a> on the way down is superb, and the wild landscape is truly peaceful, but keep your wits about you if you run into any Arctic foxes.
In the end, this is a worthy hiking trail which will take about 1H45 to make a return trip for a total of about 5 km.
If you're driving south, it would be a real shame to pass by Hengifoss and its little sister Litlanesfoss without stopping to see its famous red stripes.

The Hengifoss Waterfall Hiking Trail

The Eastfjords region is often overlooked by tourists, which is a crying shame as it boasts some of the country's most beautiful and pleasant hiking trails. Indeed, even locals consider Egilsstaðir one of the best regions for hiking in Iceland.
Good to know, the weather in the region is also slightly milder than in the rest of the island, on average a little warmer than Reykjavík.
In the northern part of the <a title="Eastern Fjords" href="/guide/east/east-fjords">Eastern Fjords</a> there is a hiking wonderland called the Víknaslóðir trail, listed by National Geographic as one of the 25 most beautiful treks in the world in 2005.

The hikes are mainly located between <a title="Seydisfjordur" href="/guide/east/seydisfjordur" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seydisfjordur</a> and the north of <a title="Bakkagerdi" href="/guide/east/borgarfjordur-eystri-bakkagerdi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bakkagerdi</a>, representing a total of 150 kilometers of mostly easy or medium-level trails.
Shelters along the way are particularly well-equipped with running water, a dryer for wet clothes, a 12V charger, comfortable mattresses, well-equipped kitchens, a beautiful dining room and a wood stove.
Historically, this remote region is legendary for being the central province of the Elf Kingdom. Their queen resides there in her fortress, Alfaborg, a charming hill of smooth stones wreathed in flowers which you can visit just behind the small wooden church of Bakkagerdi.

Víknaslóðir trail is not strictly-speaking a trek like the ones Iceland is most famous for, such as the <a title="Laugavegur between Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork" href="/guide/highlands/landmannalaugar/laugavegur-trail" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Laugavegur from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork</a>, but rather a network of hiking trails that can range from a few hours to a few days in the small paradise of Iceland's eastern fjords.
The hikes here are also unlike the harsh terrain found deep in the center of the island, nothing to do with the volcano trails of Landmannalaugar or Kerlingarfjöll. The Eastfjords are all about waterfalls, lakes, coves, canyons, small caves, the seaside, and lush greenery all around you. The majority include mountain trails with lush vegetation and peaks with magnificent views of the fjords.

Nearly 50 hiking trails are listed on the map, however some are more famous than others, as is the case with the hikes 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, and 14 that lead to Storurð, or “The Giant Rocks”. This site is located very close to Borgarfjörður Eystri under a small glacier to the west of the Dyrfjöll Mountains with their incredible colors.
This unique natural site consists of gigantic boulders that appear just dropped into these lush green meadows around turquoise ponds. This magnificent panorama is found at the end of a 2.5H hike from the Vatnsskarð pass (<a title="Viknaslodir Map" href="https://static.voyage-islande.fr/posts/292/Viknaslodir-Map.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">see map</a>).
While you could just do a short hike, we recommend you devote at least one day to this region and really pick a few and enjoy the day out. One great combo is to start on trail 9 from Vatnsskarð and return on trail 8 (17 km/5:30 approximately).
This combo starts strong with a steep climb, but after 45 minutes you reach Geldingafjall with an incredible view. The way back down is via a fairly well-marked path for about 1.5H to reach the walls of the fantastic Dyrfjöll mountain range. The path leading then to Storurð is directly indicated. The return is made a descent along the stream and by taking path 8.

One of the most popular trails is the 3-day combo leading from Borgarfjörður Eystri to Seydisfjordur.
<ul>
<li>Day 1: (15 km) Starting from Kolbeinsfjara, about 4 km from Borgarfjörður, take trail 19 towards the mountains and the Brunavikurskarð Pass. Turn south via trail 21 at Brúnavik, past the magnificent Kerlingfjall, until you reach the Breiðavik refuge after 6 to 7 hours of walking for your first overnight stay.</li>
<li>Day 2: (13.5 km) Strike out on trail 30 across the green meadows at the foot of Mount Hvitafjall before heading south to the Husavik refuge, where you spend your second night after 6 to 7 hours of walking.</li>
<li>Day 3: (14 km) Follow trail 37 to the coast of Loðmundarfjörður and the Klyppstaður refuge at the bottom of the fjord. Trail 14 will take you from Loðmundarfjörður to Seydisfjordur through beautiful landscapes surrounded by countless small waterfalls.</li>
</ul>
It would be a shame not to spend at least a day taking in these landscapes. The scenery is less exotic compared to the dramatic Landmannalaugar for example, but hiking in the eastern fjords around the Dyrfjöll mountain range is truly unforgettable with breathtaking panoramas and contrasts.

The Eastfjords region boasts some of most beautiful and pleasant hiking trails in Iceland.

As you turn off Road number 1 towards the Eastern Fjords, Road 85 will take you directly to the charming village of Vopnafjörður. 
About twenty kilometers before you reach Vopnafjörður there is an exit onto Road 919 for the Bustarfell Museum. This unique site is one of the last peat farms in East Iceland, and the place is so authentic it feels like stepping out of a time capsule.
<h2>Bustarfell: A treasured heritage</h2>

Now under the protection of the National Museum of Iceland, the farms were originally built in 1770. Numerous elements were protected over the years, some relics donated by Elín Methúsalemsdóttir in 1982, others directly by the farmer Bustarfell Methúsalemsson in the late 1960s.
Much like the <a href="/guide/south/skogar-museum" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Skogar Museum</a> in South Iceland, or Laufas in North Akureyri, Bustarfell museum represents a slice of rural life in Iceland rich history. The entire farm's 17 houses retrace 200 years of local history.
People were living in these houses until as late as 1966. Bustarfell is now a very active heritage museum and hosts regular workshops to commemorate the methods and know-how of local townsfolk.
As in Laufas, the floor inside the houses is hard-packed earth, and you'll see period furniture and countless relics, including some moving historic photographs.
Each room on the farm tells its own story: baejardyr (entrance hall), badstofa (living room), skemma or skali (hangars), hlada (warehouse), a palli hjonahus (master bedrooms upstairs), eldhus (kitchens)...
Fascinating is the clear distinction in lifestyle changes over time, with the reconstruction in the mid-20th century. The oldest rooms originally date back to 1770, but some are much more recent, dated in the 1960s.
Just behind the farm is Café Croft, a lovely place to recharge your batteries. The owner will surely recommend the short hiking trail up a nearby hill that takes you to “the Stone of the Elf Woman” (Elf-Rock, Álfkonusteinn). To reach it you'll have to drive 5 minutes on a trail to a riverside with a great view of the Þuríðarfoss waterfall in the distance, this is where you have to park to start the short 30-minute hike to the rock.
The Bustarfell Museum is not open all year round but only from June 10th to September 10th from 10AM to 5PM.

The Bustarfell Museum

The northeastern region of Iceland, beyond Vopnafjörður, is often forgotten by tourists. Discover this wild side of Iceland with a very photogenic coastline, a place with some truly beautiful hiking trails like the Fuglabjagarnes trail.

The entire north-east coastline is a truly wild place, the dark beach sand strewn with driftwood straight from the forests of Siberia. These shores are sometimes impressively steep, with surprising basalt formations rising up out of the sea, as you can see along the <a title="The hike to Raudanes" href="/guide/east/raudanes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Raudanes hiking trail</a>.
The region is not very touristy, and even in the middle of summer you're likely to have the place to yourself while hiking. As for the wildlife, you can't miss all the sheep in the green meadows and on the shores of Fuglabjagarnes's beaches. There is also a huge population of <a title="The birds" href="/wildlife/birds-iceland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">birds</a>: Arctic terns, of course, but also seagulls, fulmars, cormorants, and magpies.
Getting to Fuglabjagarnes is quite simple. From Vopnafjörður, take Road 85 north for 10 km before turning right onto the 913 towards the coast and Strandhöfn. Continue down the small dirt road for about 4 km until you find the small Fuglabjagarnes car park on the right (marked Hiking Trail 178).
<h2>A pleasant evening hike</h2>
The light is superb in Fuglabjagarnes, whether it's the pale early morning for travelers staying overnight in Vopnafjörður or in the warm tones of evening. In summer, the sun hides behind the Steinsöxl and Fuglabjagahaeðir mountains, stretching the day out with magnificent crepuscule colors.
The hike itself is very easy-going, a family-friendly affair. It takes about 1.5 hours to complete the 5.5 km loop along the beach. The path is narrow and sometimes a bit muddy but well marked by small yellow pegs.
From the car park, it winds down to the beach for about 800 meters along the small Fugla river and to its mouth, flowing into the sea down a small waterfall just a few meters tall.
The walk continues along and then across the beach, the sand dotted with driftwood, and only the sound of Arctic terns breaking the silence. We then reach the end of Fuglabjagarnes and the sand gives way to more rocky landscapes. The small steep cliffs rising in the distance face off with the basalt columns that rise dramatically from the sea, reminiscent of those seen in <a title="Raudinupur" href="/guide/north/raudinupur" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Raudinupur</a>.
Numerous birds nest in these parts and you can definitely hear them make an impressive amount of noise. At this end of the hiking loop we can see the pretty town of Vopnafjörður in the distance and the beautiful snowy mountain of Smjörfjöll on the horizon.
The road back passes through meadows that sometimes get a bit swampy before heading back to the beach. You'll then get a chance to spot the impressive herd of sheep living in the Fuglabjagarnes meadows before arriving at the car park.

The Fuglabjagarnes Hiking Trail

Iceland is widely known for its hot springs, a blessing from the island's major geothermal activity.
The Vök Baths rely on geothermal energy from the Egilsstaðir region in eastern Iceland to provide visitors with an unforgettable spa experience.
The eastern region of Iceland doesn't have as many hot springs as the rest of the island, and this is one of the reasons for the appeal of the Vök Baths, which opened in summer 2019. Located on Lake Urriðavatn, northwest of Egilsstaðir, the Vök Baths offer the first floating pools in Iceland.

Like the <a title="Secret Lagoon" href="/guide/west/goldencircle/secret-lagoon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Secret Lagoon</a> near Fluðir, <a title="Myvatn Nature Baths" href="/guide/north/myvatn/myvatn-nature-baths" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Myvatn Nature Baths</a>, or the famous <a title="Blue Lagoon" href="/guide/west/reykjanes/blue-lagoon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blue Lagoon</a>, <a title="Vök Baths" href="https://vok-baths.is/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Vök Baths</a> has become one <a title="The best hot springs in the country" href="/maps/iceland-hotsprings-map" target="_blank" rel="noopener">of the best hot springs in the country</a>.
The concept is very recent, a modern take on the outdoor spa, and was designed by the same architect who built the Blue Lagoon. The prime location of this geothermal resort in the heart of the crystal waters of Lake Urriðavatn makes it one of the most pleasant springs in the country.
About ten years ago, natural hot springs were discovered in Lake Urriðavatn when locals noticed that the snow did not cover the entire lake. A bit of research determined that hot springs gush hot water into the depths of the lake, with temperatures recorded around 75°.
In Iceland, when you see water that has not frozen in winter, there's a very good chance the explanation is a hot spring under water. Named “vök” by the Icelanders, the spa became the “Vök Baths”.
The Vök baths have a special feature that many will appreciate. Unlike most hot springs in Iceland where the stink of sulfur hangs everywhere, Vök is the exception, and even offers the only drinkable natural hot water in Iceland! You can indeed drink the spring water of Lake Urriðavatn, it is pure enough to be certified potable.

Located in eastern Iceland, right at the entrance to the Eastern Fjords, the Vök Baths are located 5 km north-east of Egilsstaðir. They are fairly easy to find and quite well indicated. In fact, starting from Egilsstaðir and heading north on the Ring road towards Akureyri, just stay on the road for just over 4 km after the town before turning right on 925, and you'll be there after a few hundred meters.
You can also get there by <a title="busses" href="/plan/iceland-by-bus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bus</a> on line 56 that takes you from Akureyri to Egilsstadir.

There are currently 3 pools at Vök Baths, but more will be added. There is a sauna for spa amateurs, and you can even swim in the cold waters of the lake for a bracing dip before returning to the hot waters.
Two floating pools large enough to accommodate a good dozen people, and a very large pool is located just near the changing rooms, ensure you won't be fighting for space.
Like any other swimming establishment, you need to swing through the changing rooms and showers before you can get to the pools. Then take the large wooden footbridges to get around the resort and get into the floating pools. The pools are large enough to give you a bit of privacy with only a few people, and this is the best way to really enjoy the absolutely breathtaking view of the lake and the surroundings.
The hotel also offers a café restaurant with various local specialties, and a bar since the establishment has a partnership with a local microbrewery “Austri Brugghús” which offers excellent craft beers.
For tea lovers, visitors can try local herbal teas and the water comes from the lake itself. A complementary cup of infused herbs is included with the entrance to the spa.

Lake Lögurinn, also called Lagarfljót, is located near Egilsstaðir in the Austurland region of East Iceland.
Lagarfljót is named after the glacial river that flows through it, which is in fact a tributary of the Jökulsá í Fljótsdal. These glacier rivers are made of the meltwater of the huge <a title="Vatnajokull" href="/guide/south/vatnajokull" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vatnajökull</a> glacier as it makes its way to the lake. The milky white color of Lake Lögurinn is typical of glacial waters.
To be specific, the Lögurinn is located in the Fljótsdalur valley and is one of the largest lakes in Iceland, covering 53 km² for 25 kilometers in length and a depth of 112 meters in places.

The town of Egilsstaðir is located on the eastern shore of Lake Lögurinn and is located along road number 1 that goes around Iceland. From here, Highway 931 goes around the lake and even though it is in very good condition, there is still a stretch of land several tens of kilometers on the west shore.
Even if part of it is in the ground, there is no problem going around the lake with a traditional vehicle.
Generally, the area around the lake is accessible in winter, including route 931.

With more than 2,500 inhabitants, the city of Egilsstaðir is known as capital of the East. It has everything you could ask for: museums, cafés, restaurants, and lots of accommodation options, making this town an excellent choice for an overnight stay in the region.

The Hengifoss waterfall is located on the Brekkuselslækur stream on the western shore of Lake Lögurinn. It is in fact the Hengifossá river that flows into Lake Lögurinn.

Very similar to Hengifoss but much less well known, the 74-meter Strútsfoss waterfall is located about 20 km south of the lake. Hallormsstaður Forest (known locally as Hallormsstaðarskógur) is the only forest in the country worthy of the name. This is a protected wildlife area and the first ever National Forest in Iceland.
Starting in the early 20th century, a number of reforestation programs have begun to bear fruit, such that the region now has more than 12 million trees of 54 different species.

<h2 id="monstre">The monster of Lagarfljót</h2>

Lake Lögurinn is also famous for another reason. Much like Nessie living in the Loch Ness in Scotland, Lake Lögurinn has its own legend. Apparently in the murky depths of the lake lives a sea monster shaped like a giant snake with the sweet name Lagarfljótsormurinn.
The legend dates back to 1345, when the first mention of the creature appeared in local literature. The story behind the monster was about a girl who decided rather sadistically to lock a small snake in a chest along with a golden ring. A few days later, she realized that the trunk was in fact splitting as the snake was growing to monstrous size. Our not-so-brave protagonist threw it into the lake in a fit of panic to get rid of it.
Since then, over the centuries, there have been many stories about the reappearance of this gigantic sea snake, aparantly big enough to capsize boats, as told in a story dated 1589. Apparently it can also move on land, as when it chased after rangers in the Hallormsstaður forest in 1967. 
More recently, in 1998, a teacher and her students spotted the creature from the window of their classroom in Hallormsstaðaskóli school.
Finally, in 2012, the monster made the news again with the video of a farmer in the Fljótsdalur Valley (see above).

Lagarfljót : Lögurinn lake

The small island of Papey is located in the southern part of the Eastern Fjords in Iceland. Located 6 km offshore and accessible from the small port in Djúpivogur, Papey is a natural reserve and completely uninhabited.
Bird watchers know Papey well, as the place is a reference for the kind of local avifauna you don't see elsewhere, especially puffins. Visitors looking to witness these fascinating creatures will always find them here!

Arrival on the island of Papey
The island of Papey is tiny, only 2 km² in size, and relatively flat since its highest point does not exceed 58 m in altitude.
Its name “Papey” comes from “papar” which literally means “Irish monk”, as this small landmass was once inhabited by Irish monks driven from the mainland of Iceland during the colonial era. While several texts from the 12th century seem to confirm this, no archaeological excavations so far have proven the existence of dwellings dating from this period, so it remains a mystery of etymology.
It was in 1726 that Papey reached its population high-point: 16 inhabitants. The island became completely uninhabited in 1948, and all that remains is a small church that dates back to 1902, a farm, a lighthouse and a weather station. The church is well known in Iceland as it is the oldest wooden church in Iceland.
<h2 id="aller">How to get there</h2>

The small island of Papey is located off the coast of Djúpivogur in the eastern fjords, about 100 km north of Höfn. Once you arrive in Djúpivogur, as you might expect, you have to take a boat to get to Papey. The port is located near the Framtíð hotel.
The journey is very short since the island is only 6 km from the port of Djúpivogur, so the crossing takes a mere 50 minutes. Excursions are only offered in summer, and the views over the fjords along the way are absolutely magnificent. The boat can transport about twenty people.
Between the departure from Djúpivogur and the return, it takes 4 hours, with departures in the early afternoon at 1:00 PM. So you have about 2 hours to go around the island.

Around the island, local wildlife is thriving and represent the main point of interest for the excursion. The island of Papey is famous for being a a reliable puffin viewing station until the end of August.

In 1H30, you can easily visit the whole island, taking the time to make frequent photo breaks. The small church of Papey is almost the only construction outside the lighthouse and is therefore well worth visiting as well.

Papey: The Puffin Island

The Stuðlagil Canyon is located in eastern Iceland, hidden in the middle of the Jökla River, some distance from the beaten track of road number 1.
Stuðlagil is said by many to be the most beautiful canyon in Iceland. With its incredible basalt columns and turquoise waters running through its gates, the canyon has become one of the hottest tourist sites in recent years, drawing countless people from all over the world.

When you first set eyes on the canyon, even if you've seen it in a thousand pictures before, you will be stunned by the composition and colour of this veritable living painting. It almost looks too perfect to be a natural feature.
But man had no hand in the making of this canyon, its origins are 100% natural...
<h3>How the Stuðlagil Canyon was formed</h3>

As is often the case in Iceland, the answer is: volcanoes. A massive eruption pumped lava into what is now the canyon and the rapid cooling of the lava led to the formation of these basaltic columns that bring to mind organ pipes. Erosion by the waters of the Jökla sculpted the rest.
These basalt organs are a common feature in Iceland, with another famous example being the <a title="Svartifoss waterfall" href="/guide/south/skaftafell/svartifoss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Svartifoss waterfall</a> in the south.
This canyon also has a magical side: the waters running through it change colour. In fact, some days in summer when the water level is low, the water in Jökla is absolutely crystal clear and takes on a shade of turquoise blue that tends to emerald green. Other days, the color is a dark brown-green.
This is all due to the varying water level due to rains, glacier melts, but also to the much-criticized Kárahnjúkar dam further south (Hálslón Reservoir), which dumps its meltwater into the river at the end of August, raising it significantly.
<h3>The discovery of Stuðlagil is very recent</h3>

Finally, the most incredible thing about this magnificent canyon is that it was completely unknown until 2017... In fact, the construction of the famous Hálslón reservoir and the Kárahnjúkar hydroelectric power plant (a colossal project consisting of 5 dams), 60 km further south, began in 2003 and ended in early 2009.
This dam impacted the level of the water that flows into the Jökuldalur valley and the Stuðlagil region. This changed the landscape quite literally and some places have been rediscovered in a new light. The basalt columns, until 2009 an underwater feature, now stand in plain view...
In August 2016 photographer Einar Páll Svavarsson visited the canyon and snapped a few photos of this newly revealed landscape, and had them published in WOW Magazine the following year. Following this publication, this canyon was put on the world map thanks to massive engagement on social media networks.
<h2 id="aller-studlagil">How to get there</h2>

The canyon is a little far from the usual tourist circuit around route number 1, but you can get there quite easily even with a traditional vehicle.
There are few villages in the region, but the nearest one, Egilsstaðir, the eastern crossroads, is only 1 hour away by car.
To get there, take road number 1 heading west towards the Mývatn region before turning off on route 923, a dirt road but in very good condition. Signs to the canyon are already marked on route number 1, so you'll know when to exit. After a 19-kilometer drive on the 923 you'll arrive at a new intersection with a guesthouse names Skjödólfsstaðir, and from here you have two options:

You can do both of course, but if you had to pick one, we strongly recommend the view from the east.
<h3>Stuðlagil west side</h3>

To admire the canyon from the west bank, don't take the first exit signed “Stuðlagil”, instead continue 4 km south on the 923 until you reach the Grund farm. In 2020 the municipality built a car park as well as a metal staircase leading to a viewing platform perched at the top of the canyon.
This avoids a hike but it's not the best view of the canyon, far from it. But if you are into drone photography or film, this is a great way to snap shots of the canyon from up high.
<h3>Stuðlagil east side</h3>

This is the best route, but you'll have to work for it. To get there it's quite simple:
When you reach the 923 near Skjödólfsstaðir, turn off at the first sign indicating “Stuðlagil” on the left. From here, it's a quick drive to the car park at the “Klaustursel farm”.
The second, official car park is also on the west bank of the river but leads to a wooden bridge (photo above) to cross the river. While it is accessible to vehicles, it's reserved for residents of Klaustursel (despite this, many break the rules...). Driving across allows takes you to another smaller car park 2 km away (and halves the hiking time), but we recommend you follow the rules.
From this first car park, you can begin your hike right along the steep walls of the canyon.
<h2 id="rando-studlagil">The hike to the Stuðlagil Canyon</h2>

The hiking trail has plenty of signage, so you won't get lost unless you're trying to. Once across the wooden bridge, the path follows the river bank to the best viewpoint.
From the bridge, the trail follows an uninteresting stone path for 2 km to the “unofficial” car park, before turning into a small dirt path overlooking the canyon. From here, the basalt organs will begin rising around you.
700 or so meters after the second car park, your next stop will be near a pretty little waterfall, Stuðlafoss, which flows between the canyon walls, a bit like that of Svartifoss in Skaftafell.
The colors of the canyon walls are simply breathtaking and about 5 km from the official car park, you will find the best viewpoint. It's a very easy walk along the banks, accessible to old and young with almost no elevation. It won't take more than 1 hour to get to the Stuðlagil Canyon, another choice viewing spot.

From here, the opposite bank appears in incredible lighting, basalt organs with whimsical shapes stand alongside perfectly straight parallel columns stacked neatly for tens of meters, creating a stunning effect of perspective.
You can admire the canyon from high up, looking down at the basalt columns, but you can also get right to the waterline (photo above) where the visual effect is most striking.
To go down, it's wet, smooth stone so be sure to keep a hand on the rope bolted to the stone as a handrail. Even with this, you still need to be very careful as unlike the west bank there are no guardrails on this side, and the Jökla's current can be quite strong ...
In total, the round trip will take about 2 hours, or 2 hours 15 minutes maximum, but remember to factor in the time you spend taking your best Instagram snap.
<h2 id="quand-studlagil">When to go to Stuðlagil</h2>

Stuðlagil is best visited in summer, from June and mid-August. This is when the colors will be at their most visually striking due to the vivid contrast. And as mentioned, at the end of August the hydroelectric power plant upstream pumps its reservoir of meltwater into the canyon, which completely changes the water level and landscape. The colors become dull in comparison to the summer months, and the vegetation around the canyon is already turning brown for the winter.
The site is very busy in summer, a bit too busy in fact, since its discovery in 2016. So we recommend visiting when the crowds are sparse, at least if you want to avoid too many random tourists in your photos. Before 10 am or after 6 pm is ideal.
For photographers, the shaded evening light during the midnight sun period in July makes for an exceptional vista in Stuðlagil.
<h2 id="dormir-studlagil">Where to sleep near Stuðlagil</h2>

Given the influx of tourists there, it may be wiser to seek accommodation close enough to Stuðlagil so you can pick your moment to go there in the evening or early in the morning.
Good news for camping lovers, the campsite near the official Stuðlagil car park and the Klaustursel farm offers about 100 locations with toilets and a public sinks for washing up.

Stuðlagil (Studlagil) canyon in Iceland

The eastern fjords of Iceland are famous for their hiking trails, and the ones that lead to Stórurð are some of the most beautiful in the region.

The scree of Stórurð 
Stórurð literally means “big wreckage”, but the name doesn't do it justice. The site is an oasis of turquoise pools in green meadows dotted with impressive boulders, with the steep flanks of the Dyrfjöll mountains in the background.
It was formed at the end of the last ice age, and its huge rolling stones were probably carried by the ice left here as the glaciers receded.
The several peaks in the Dyrfjöll range are as follows:

This remote landscape in the middle of the Urdardalur valley, with these snowy peaks reflected in the turquoise waters, is quite a sight. Storurð is without a doubt one of the unknown jewels of the eastern Fjords.

This is the perfect place for hiking in summer with nice weather. The warmer months will bring out all the contrasts that make this place so special, and the trails are dry and easygoing rather than muddy underfoot. The trails are very well-marked and not very crowded.
We recommend June to August, regardless of the trail you choose to reach Storurd (see below). And clear skies really are the best conditions to enjoy the panoramic views from this peak.
You'll find this little slice of heaven near Borgarfjörður Eystri in the Eastern Fjords. From Egilsstaðir, the crossroads of the Eastern Fjords, take route 94 north to Borgarfjörður Eystri, about 1 hour's drive and 70 km away.
You don't actually have to go through the village, as the car parks serving the hiking trails are located before you get there along Road 94...
<h2 id="randonnees-storurd">The various hikes that lead to Storurd</h2>

The 3 main hiking routes to Stórurð 
There are 5 official hiking trails in <a title="Viknaslodir" href="/guide/east/viknaslodir" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Viknaslodir</a> that lead to Stórurð, numbered: 8, 9, 10, 13 and 14. Trail 13 starts in Bakkagerði (Borgarfjörður Eystri) and takes no less than 11.5 km to reach Stórurð, and that's just one way.
The 3 most popular trails to reach Stórurð are the 8, 9, and 10, marked in red on the map above. Keep in mind that each departs from a different car park. Some hikers choose to take one of the trails on the way there and another on the way back, but this has a serious disadvantage as you'll have to return to your car park via route 94, and they are quite far apart.
<h3>The 3 main trails to Stórurð</h3>
The 3 car parks are very easy to find, as indicated on the map above. They can accommodate a few dozen cars and are located right on road 94. These car parks are dedicated to the hike, so you will find information and directions posted there.

Considered by many to be the most beautiful trail to Storurð, it is also the shortest and most picturesque, but also the most technical. This trail takes you between the Súla and Súlur mountains, right through the heart of the Mjóidalur valley.
So this is a high-level hike with a few rivers to cross, and you need to be well-equipped and well-prepared to handle this safely. The elevation is significant, some sections are literally swampy, and there are unavoidable river crossings towards the end of the journey.

This trail is steep right from the start, and it is also the longest, but the views over the coves of the fjord make it worth every drop of sweat. This trail takes you to the west of Mount Súlur and is like the previous one reserved for experienced hikers.

This is the easiest trail of the 3, with almost no elevation, running along the foot of Mount Súlur through lush green meadows. This is the family-friendly option that we will focus on.
<h2 id="rando-storurd">The hike from Vatnsskarðsvegur</h2>

The hike from Vatnsskarðsvegur is accessible to everyone
The Vatnsskarðsvegur car park is the westernmost car park of the 3, if you are driving from Bakkagerði to Egilsstaðir, this is the first you'll come across.
Once you are parked and your boots are laced, you begin the trail going southwest to bypass Mount Súlur along the Rjupnafell. The hike is perfectly marked by yellow pegs and the path is quite obvious, it would be hard to get lost.
You'll be crossing lush green meadows dotted with small ponds and waterfalls. This part of the trail has almost no elevation at all. The second part of the hike takes you east and across a number of streams (very easy to cross without getting your feet wet).

This second part of the hike is where you'll feel a bit of elevation in the middle of the meadows, while the Dyrfjöll range and its snowy peaks start to be clearly visible. This gentle elevation continues as you get closer to the Stórurð Circus.

The Stórurð loop at the foot of the Dyrfjöll
This sign standing in the middle of nowhere explains that the trail loops approximately 1.5 km around the Stórurð rock formation. You can go right or left, but whichever one you choose, if you keep going you'll come back to this fork in the road that leads to your car park.
The right hand trail will have you climbing some of these giant boulders until you reach a plateau where you'll see small ponds surrounded by the famous Stórurð boulders.

Keep going down this trail to reach the main ponds, with their turquoise waters which, when the weather is clear, will reflect the mountain peaks.
The view is truly exceptional, and hikers often stop to relax around these small mountain lakes and enjoy a picnic before heading back to the car.

The beautiful ponds of Stórurð 
As mentioned previous, some hikers take one trail to the Stórurð loop but choose a different route back, such as the Vatnsskarð trail for example.
If you are coming back via the same Vatnsskarðsvegur trail you took there, you're looking at 7.1 km, plus the 1.5 km loop, and 7.1 km back, which adds up to about 16 km. It's not at all difficult terrain and the landscape is phenomenal.
For the whole hike you can estimate about 5 hours, the walk there and back with a picnic break in between.

For camping enthusiasts, you're in luck! You will find one very close to Stórurð in the Borgarfjörður Eystri Fjord, in the village itself, known as the Borgarfjörður Eystri Campsite. It has a good reputation, spacious and located only 700 meters from the village.

The Stórurð (Storurd) Hiking Trails

The Strútsfoss waterfall is a beautiful yet little-known waterfall in eastern Iceland, located in the Fljotsdalur valley. Strútsfoss can be seen from afar and it is also one of the highest waterfalls in the country.
Less well known than its neighbor Hengifoss, the Strútsfoss waterfall is definitely worth a visit.

Strútsfoss waterfall
Strútsfoss is a pretty established tourist attraction, in fact it's one of 30 places of interest in the guides certified by the East Iceland Tourist Board. The waterfall is magnificent and in fact has two levels.
The first cascade is 100 meters high, and the second is about 20 meters. Strútsfoss is often compared to its neighbor <a title="Hengifoss" href="/guide/east/hengifoss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hengifoss</a>, and that's because of the actual type of minerals that make up the stone. The Strútsfoss cliffs are characterised by striking red layers, much like Hengifoss, which makes these places so special.
These red strata in the basaltic rock are in fact sediments, the red color from the oxidation of iron in clay. This geological feature is one of the most beautiful aspects of this valley, the rusted tones layered on the black of the basaltic rocks, all of this framed with lush green vegetation.
The Strútsá River barrels through the deep Strútsgil gorge and falls to merge with the Fellsá River below, and it's a dramatic sight to see this powerful river cascade from such steep cliffs. To its right, Mount Suðurfell rises to an altitude of 663 meters.

While access is often closed in winter, from April you can already get there, and it's particularly charming with the snow.
The best time to go there is between April and October. The waterfall is kind of far from the main roads of eastern Iceland, south of <a title="Lagarfljót lake" href="/guide/east/lagarfljot-logurinn-lake" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lagarfljót lake</a> near the <a title="Hallormsstaður" href="/guide/east/hallormsstadur" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hallormsstaður</a> forest.

From Egilsstaðir, it is very easy to get there, and no need for a 4x4. Go south on the 95 and follow signs to the Lagarfljót lake on Road 931, then continue on the 935 to Sturluflöt.
You'll find a farm with a small car park where the start of the hike is clearly indicated.

Hiking along this trail is easy, an easygoing loop that starts at the parking lot running east along the Fellsá River.
You can't see the waterfall at first and the trail, perfectly marked with red pegs, has steady elevation for the ascent. After a rocky path, you enter the Strútsgil canyon to reach an idyllic meadow with an enormous cairn with a beautiful view of the waterfall.

The hiking trail stops shortly after the cairn, after a final ascent, but there is no way to get down to the water. The view into the canyon below is truly beautiful.
You'll need a good zoom to get detailed shots of the water, as it's a hundred meters away. Some have started using drones to have a better viewing angle, as risky as that may be.
Count about 1 hour to climb to the waterfall and the same to return, for a total of 7 km there and back.

The Strútsfoss Hiking Trail

Eystrahorn is a splendid mountain located at the extreme south-east tip of Iceland. It is also called Austurhorn or Hvalnesfjall because it is located in direct proximity to the orange lighthouse of Hvalnes, which marks the border between the east and south of the island.
Eystrahorn, literally the “Horn of the East”, is part of the Krossanesfjall mountain range and is often compared to the famous Vestrahorn on the other side of Lón Bay.

<h2 id="eystrahorn">Eystrahorn: a little-known mountain</h2>

Eystrahorn is, as most landscapes here, of volcanic origin and dominates the landscape from its towering 757 meters.
The mountain is made up of layers of magma that cooled slowly, and it's very likely that a caldera previously covered what is now the Bay of Lón.
This same bay extends for several tens of kilometers to <a title="Vestrahorn" href="/guide/south/vestrahorn-stokksnes-beach" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vestrahorn</a>, which is much better known. The black sand beach extends as far as the eye can see and is home to all sorts of birdlife, including swans and gulls.
The stunning colours are what make the Eystrahorn mountain so photogenic. It owes this colors scheme to its volcanic minerals, the darker gabbro and paler granophyre, the stone rich in magnesium and iron.
Although it is not safe to climb, Eystrahorn is very popular with photographers due to its unique shape and colors, which are even more beautiful at sunset, and the numerous viewpoints to capture its beauty.
<h2 id="quefaire">What to do in Eystrahorn</h2>

This mountain is a dream for photographers. There are numerous locations with great angles on the dramatic peak. Near the Hvalnes lighthouse there are several excellent spots with an angle on Eystrahorn with the waves crashing on the rocks. The late afternoon is a favourite time of day because the colors are simply incredible.
As you get closer to the road, there are several small lakes with still waters that allow you to capture Eystrahorn reflected perfection for the most beautiful effect. In winter, these small lakes are frozen, so while you won't get a mirror image, the ice has its own charm.
Also, between the lighthouse and the beach, the swamps display vivid greens and blues that contrast perfectly with Eystrahorn.

The orange lighthouse of Hvalnes, otherwise called “Whale Point”, forms a small rocky promontory that overlooks the ocean. As the name suggests, it's a known whale-watching spot. And if you're not lucky enough to spot any of the giants cetaceans, you have a good chance of seeing seals playing around the rocky shore.
Finally, the black sand beach is huge, stretching over a few kilometers, that and makes for a very pleasant walk.

Despite being very poorly indicated, it is rather easy to get there.
Just park your car at the Hvalnes lighthouse parking lot, as this is near the various viewpoints to admire Eystrahorn. Coming from the south, it takes about 45 minutes to drive the 50 kilometers from <a title="Höfn " href="/guide/south/hofn" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Höfn</a> to the Hvalnes lighthouse. Coming from the east, it's about the same time and distance from the small port of Djúpivogur to Hvalnes.

When you arrive at the foot of Eystrahorn from road number 1, you'll have to find the small dirt road leading to the small car park in Hvalnes. There are no signs however, so the only way to find the way is to keep your eyes peeled for the orange lighthouse, but it's a pretty obvious landmark, so the path is not hard to find.
Road 1 is in tip-top condition, so no need for a 4x4 vehicle to get there, as the small dirt road over a few hundred meters is in very good condition. The site is also accessible in winter, most of the time.
From the car park, a small path leads to the lighthouse and to the black sand beach.
<h2 id="dormir">Accommodation around Eystrahorn</h2>

The place is not very busy, photo enthusiasts like to go there early in the morning or in the evening to get the best light to highlights the beautiful colors of Eystrahorn.
There are no accommodations options directly on site, but two options stand out less than 20 minutes from Hvalnes:

Hrafnavellir Guesthouse is located on the way to Höfn and offers small, modern chalets with sea views. The breakfast is excellent with an exceptional homemade Skyr that has made them a reputation.
The Starmýri cottages are only 15 minutes from Hvalnes and offers quite spacious holiday homes with a good reputation as well.

Eystrahorn and Hvalnes Beach

You'll find Skjólfjörur Beach a few kilometers south of Vopnafjörður in eastern Iceland. This particular coastline is famous for the rocky islets that rise from the sea just offshore, and in particular the Ljósastapi rock shaped like an elephant head.

Although far from the main roads, the site is rather easy to access via Road 917 about fifteen kilometers south of Vopnafjörður.
The small and scenic Road 917 makes for a magnificent drive. Coming from the south, you'll see as you crest a hill the full breathtaking panorama of the beaches below.

There is a small car park, simply indicated by a sign as you reach the end of Road 917 when arriving from the south, and from the road you can even see the rock islet standing proudly in the water.
<h2 id="ljosastapi">Ljósastapi and Skjólfjörur Beach</h2>

Skjólfjörur Beach is a beautiful pebble beach that resembles many other coastlines in eastern Iceland. And like them, you will find driftwood that floated ashore here from Siberia.
A small path goes down to the beach from the car park, and it only takes 5 minutes to reach Ljosastapi, and generally speaking the Vopnafjörður fjord sometimes welcomes whales, so keep your eyes peeled!
The beach is known for its rocky islets, which are just massive rocks just dropped into the sea or right on the beach (depending on the tide). A short walk along the lapping waves will allow you to approach some of them.

The best known is called Ljósastapi, often called “Fíllinn” by Icelanders, and lies a little offshore, about twenty meters from the beach. The Elephant Rock, as it is known internationally, is indeed uncannily shaped like a profile view of an elephant head.
In the background, you can see the Búrið mountain, which is part of the Fagradalsfjöll Massif, with its extraordinary Therribjörg cliffs and beautiful rhyolite rocks.

There is also a small marked trail that leads east of Hellisheiði Eystri from the beach to Þerribjörg. It's a long and arduous hike, but well worth it. There are seldom many tourists in the area, as the region is rather away from the main roads.
<h2 id="cascade">Gljúfursárfoss waterfall</h2>

Heading west, about 5 kilometers from the beach, you will find the Gljúfursárfoss waterfall, an impressive cascade dropping about 45 meters and well worth a detour.
The water pools in a beautiful landscape of volcanic rocks and vivid mosses, only a few meters from the sea. To get there, it's a short drive from the beach and there is a small car park located very close to the road. But if you want to use your own two legs, there is of course a hiking trail to get there that runs along the coast from Skjólfjörur.

Ljósastapi and Skjólfjörur Beach

Located on the east coast of Iceland, Mjóifjörður is the name of both a small town and a fjord. The village of Mjóifjörður (Brekka) is tiny, with only 42 inhabitants.
Mjóifjörður is one of the <a title="many fjords" href="/guide/east/east-fjords">many fjords</a> along the eastern coastline and although it is one of the least visited, it's absolutely magnificent.

The Mjóifjörður fjord, literally “narrow fjord”, is located just south of the much more famous <a title=" Seyðisfjörður " href="/guide/east/seydisfjordur">Seyðisfjörður </a>fjord. If as the crow flies it's only about 15 km between the two villages, but to make the 66km by road to reach Seyðisfjörður it'll take you about an hour and a quarter. The nearest big town is Egilsstaðir, 40 km away. 
To reach the fjord from Egilsstaðir, take Road number 1 heading south and turn left onto the 953, a small dirt road that's nevertheless accessible to traditional vehicles. However, the Mjóifjörður fjord is completely isolated in winter, you can only get there by boat, the 953 being closed from November until April or even May.

The small road runs alongside a river that cuts through beautifully lush landscapes and is worth the detour alone! The road climbs quite suddenly and steeply towards a pass where you can enjoy an absolutely splendid panorama of the fjord before descending through the Fjarðardalur and Slenjudalur valleys.
These mountain flanks appear as magnificent meadows with innumerable streams and waterfalls cascading from the top of the mountains. The small dirt road winds its way down the pass to reach the fjord after an impressive number of shoelace turns.
<h3>Klifbrekkufossar falls</h3>
There are really no particular points of interest in this fjord, just the natural beauty of its landscape and the beautiful Klifbrekkufossar waterfall.
This particular waterfall is truly original as it is made up of several small cascades one after the other before settling in the valley bottom close to the road in the middle of the meadow. It is the main attraction in the area and its remote beauty is a sight to behold.
A small car park allows you to park a short walk away from the foot of the Klifbrekkufossar waterfalls.
<h3>The Wreckage of the Old Ship</h3>

A few kilometers away, where the sea begins creeping into the mouth of the fjord lies an old shipwreck that ran aground in 1966 and has been rusting quietly ever since. 
From here, you can venture 15 kilometers along the north coast of the fjord to reach its end, the Dalantagi Lighthouse. Bird-watching enthusiasts enjoy this particular walk to photograph the numerous species that frequent the area.
On the road leading to the lighthouse you'll pass the only village in the fjord, Brekka, with its bustling population of 42 inhabitants.

Skálanes Nature Reserve, located at the eastern tip of Seyðisfjorður fjord in eastern Iceland, is an entirely secluded private nature sanctuary.
Renowned for its striking flora and impressive birdlife, an increasing number of nature enthusiasts make their way here to rejuvenate and explore the scenic hiking trail leading to the bird cliff.

Totalling 1,250 hectares, Skálanes Nature Reserve is situated around a long-abandoned farm, 17 km to the east of Seyðisfjorður. This area is celebrated for its lush flora, notably the expansive fields of lupines that stretch as far as the eye can see.
The reserve is also home to 677-meter cliffs, providing habitat to an astounding 40 different bird species. In the surrounding meadows, one can spot numerous herds of reindeer and even the elusive arctic fox.
Additionally, the farm serves as a hub for education, environmental research, and the exploration of Icelandic cultural history. This nature and heritage center collaborates with various international researchers, regularly organizing academic visits. The goal is to establish this place as a genuine platform for scientific exploration, focusing on sustainability and species diversity.

<h2 id="skalanesgo">How to get there?</h2>

Skálanes is nestled deep within Seyðisfjorður fjord, 17 km from the town. When departing from Seyðisfjorður, follow the 952 road to the fjord's end, then take the "Skálanes" marked trail after a few kilometers.
There are two parking options: 
<ul>
<li>The first parking lot can be found in the Skálanes hamlet, just before the Austdalsa river.</li>
<li>The second parking lot, located further away, is directly in front of the Skálanes Nature &amp; Heritage Center.</li>
</ul>
For those considering a visit with a rental vehicle, it's important to note that you'll need an equipped vehicle like a 4x4 or SUV to reach the second parking lot. While the road leading there isn't in dire condition, it can be rather bumpy in places, with two streams to cross just before arriving.
Alternatively, if you prefer, you can park at Austdalsa and continue on foot, avoiding stream crossings and the bumpy portion of the trail.
The best time of year to visit Skálanes is during the summer months, ideally between May and September, with June and July being the prime months.

No matter where you begin your hike, you'll follow a small, well-marked coastal path toward the eastern point.
Starting from the Austdalsa car park, it's approximately a 9 km round trip for the more adventurous, with some sections that can be a bit slippery so be careful. For those who prefer to park near the "Heritage Center," the hike is significantly shorter, covering only around 1.5 km for the round trip. This hike is easy and involves minimal elevation gain.
Throughout the hike, you'll traverse expansive fields of enchanting lupines, with the silence occasionally broken by the calls of arctic terns, oystercatchers, magpies, and other eider birds in the area. With a touch of luck, you might even encounter some<a href="/wildlife/arctic-fox"> arctic foxes!</a>
As you approach the bird cliff, the sound becomes incessant, and you'll witness a remarkable variety of birds, including kittiwakes, puffins, guillemots, and more. In the distance, you may even be treated to the sight of a few whales on the horizon. Skálanes is a place far removed from the hustle and bustle, making it an ideal destination for an evening visit during the midnight sun, offering a chance to recharge amidst nature. For those considering a stay in Seyðisfjorður, this short hike is a splendid choice for an evening stroll.
