<p>Iceland is famous for its hot springs, and there are many to choose from. They can be found all around the island, some of which are of course harder to get to than others. This map will tell you where the best ones are.</p>
<p>Hot water rivers, geothermally heated pools... Icelanders are big fans of swimming and know how to take advantage of all the health benefits of hot springs. The country has an incalculable number of pools, most of which are of course natural spring water heated by the geothermal activity of the island.</p>
<p>What a joy to swim at 39 °C in the open under the Northern Lights or the midnight sun when the outdoor air is a brisk 0 °C to 10 °C.</p>
<p>Some, such as the <a title="Blue Lagoon" href="/guide/west/reykjanes/blue-lagoon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blue Lagoon</a><a title="Secret Lagoon by Fludir" href="/guide/west/goldencircle/secret-lagoon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">, the Secret Lagoon</a>, <a title="Vök Baths" href="/guide/east/vokbaths-hotsprings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vök Baths</a>, <a title="GeoSea" href="/guide/north/geosea-hotsprings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GeoSea</a> or <a title="Myvatn Nature Baths" href="/guide/north/myvatn/myvatn-nature-baths" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Myvatn Nature Baths</a>, are very modern resorts that charge a typical price of admission for a spa, while others are isolated in the countryside and rustic, but they won't break the bank.</p>

<p>From tiny pools just a few meters across to rushing hot water rivers like the one in <a title="Reykjadalur" href="/guide/south/reykjadalur" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reykjadalur</a>, anyone can find the perfect hot spring for their needs!</p>

The source of <b>Pollurinn</b> is located west of the village of Tálkafjörður towards Stori-Laugardalur.</br></br>
You have to drive 3.5km on the 617 before taking a track for a few hundred meters which leads directly there.</br></br>
These are 3 small concrete pools of different depths in which the temperature is around 45°C. A small cabin nearby also allows you to change clothes.</br></br>

Pollurinn

Located to the northeast of the Hofsjökull glacier and to the north of <b>Laugafell</b> mountain, there are a number of huts known as Laugafellsskalarnir.</br></br>
Between these cabins, there is a relatively large natural swimming pool (16x7m) and sufficiently deep (from 50cm to 1m50) that tourists in the region appreciate for the temperature of its water (35-38°C).</br></br >

Laugafell

<b>Strutslaug</b> is located in the Fjallabak, perhaps the most beautiful region in Iceland.</br></br>
At the junction between the road coming from Maelifell and Veðurhals there is a junction towards Strutsskali. You must continue the road to Skofluklif where you must leave your vehicle.</br></br>
From here a path towards the north of Strutur leads to springs identifiable by the smoke they give off (1h30 walk all the same...). These are several natural pools in the middle of the grass measuring 6x6m and with a depth of approximately 60cm.</br></br>
The temperature is around 40°C in the pools.

Strùtslaug

A sign indicating <b>Hitulaug</b> is located 4km from the Skjalfandafljot river bridge at the junction between the F910 which goes north towards Dyngjufjallaleið and the road leading to Gaesavatnaleið towards the east</br </br>
It is a natural pool in the middle of the grass measuring 3x4m and with a depth of approximately 60cm.</br></br>
The temperature is around 30° in the pool.

Hitulaug

South of Vatnajökull, in the Beinadalur valley is the <b>Guðlaug</b> spring along the Bergnatnsa river.</br></br>
The pool can accommodate up to 7 people but is not very deep (only 30cm at the deepest) and the temperature is around 35°C but this varies a lot.

Guðlaug

The <b>Englandshverrir</b> spring is located in the Lundarreykjadalur valley near the abandoned England farm. Just before Reykir Farm, there is a track that leads to England Farm.</br></br>
You will have to cross the Tungua River (there is a ford), from there you can walk along the river and it is quite easy to see the hot springs thanks to the smoke that emerges from the river in places.

Englandshverir

The <b>Krosslaug</b> spring is also called Reykjalaug and is located near the Reykir farm in the Lundarreykjadalur valley about fifty meters from the main road.</br></br>
It is a small pool, 2m in diameter, surrounded by grass and with a temperature of around 42°C.

Krosslaug

The <b>Snorralaug</b> spring is located in the village of Reykholt in West Iceland. This is a small stone pool dating back many years.</br></br>
The depth of the pool is 1m and the temperature is approximately 30°C. The pool is aging and poorly maintained and it is not recommended to swim there.

Snorralaug

The <b>Landbrotalaug</b> spring is located near the Eldborg volcano in West Iceland. Very close to the intersection between roads 54 and 55 there is a track leading west (near the Skjálg farm) which must be taken for approximately 1km. </br></br>
Here a small car park has been set up from which, in a few minutes, you can reach the pool, approximately 2m in diameter and with a temperature above 40°C</br></br>

Landbrotalaug

Located 20km south of Budardalur, <b>Grafarlaug</b> is also called Reykjadalslaug. To find the source, you have to exit route 60 and take a track heading SE almost at the intersection with route 585.</br></br>
After 2.5km, you arrive at the concrete swimming pool which measures 12.5x5m and whose depth is approximately 1m. Right next door is a cabin where you can change clothes.</br></br>
The water temperature varies a lot and is between 26 and 40°C.

Grafarlaug

Located 18km north of Budardalur, <b>Gudrunarlaug</b> is a pool surrounded by stone dating from the sagas era.</br></br>
A small house with a turf roof also allows you to change clothes.</br></br>
The depth is approximately 50cm and the water temperature is above 35°C.

Guðrùnarlaug

Near the entrance to Thorskafjörður, you have to exit road 60 to take 607 after Reykholar to reach the farms of Staður and Arbaer.</br></br>
From here you have to drive 5km towards the farm in <b>Laugaland</b> next to which there is an 8x4m concrete swimming pool.</br></br>
The depth is 50cm to 1m and the water temperature is over 40°C.

Laugaland

In Vatnsfjörður, the <b>Hellulaug</b> spring is located along road 62, 500m from Flokalundur. Once you arrive at the Flokalundur hotel, the hotpot is located below, very close to the sea, but is well hidden.</br></br>
It is possible to place your belongings on the rocks, the pool measures 3x4m, is approximately 60cm deep and there is gravel on the ground.</br></br>
The water temperature is around 38°C.</br></br>

Hellulaug

The spring of <b>Reykjafjarðarlaug</b> is located along road 63.</br></br>
There is a 16x10m concrete pool up to 1.80m deep but also a small stream in which it is also possible to swim (depth of approximately 50cm)</br></br>
The temperature of the swimming pool is around 32° and almost 40° in the river.</br></br>The setting, in the heart of the fjords, is absolutely unforgettable...

Reykjafjarðarlaug

The <b>Galtahryggjarlaug</b> hotpot is located in the Heydalur valley in Isafjörðup, almost at the bottom of the fjörd. You have to reach the Heydalur farm to get there and cross the small bridge over the river (Heydalsa).</br></br>
About 20 meters from here, there is a small natural pool, surrounded by grass of approximately 8m².</br></br>
The bottom is gravel and the water temperature is close to 40°C. It is also possible to change in a small cabin nearby.</br></br>
The water temperature is around 40 degrees. </br></br>

Galtahryggjarlaug

The <b>Hörgshliðarlaug</b> hotpot is located along road 633 very close to the Hörgslíð farm and is relatively easy to find as the place is marked with a small sign.</br></br >
It is a small concrete pool (with a cabin where you can change clothes) with a depth of 70cm.</br></br>
The water temperature is around 40 degrees. </br></br>

Hörgshliðarlaug

The <b>Nauteyrarlaug</b> hotpot is located along Route 635 in the Westfjords. You must take road 635 until you reach the church of Nauteyrarkirkja and take road 653.</br></br>
After about 150m, you arrive at a pretty little pool that can accommodate around ten people in the middle of the grass and surrounded by stones. A small cabin located just in front allows bathers to change</br></br>
The water temperature is around 35-40C°. </br></br>
<b>07/2017: NB: It seems that access to this hotpot has been closed to tourists by its owner.</b>

Nauteyrarlaug

The <b>Krossneslaug</b> hotpot is located in the Westfjords. You have to take route 643 then the track leading to Krossnes. The place is quite magical with the feeling of being at the end of the world with a magnificent view of the sea.</br></br>
It is a fairly large concrete pool since it measures 6x12m and has a depth of 50cm to 1.80m. </br></br>
The water temperature is around 31°. Please note, access to this pool, unlike the majority of hotpots presented on this map, requires payment (200 ISK in 2016).</br></br>

Krossneslaug

<b>Gvendarlaug</b> is located in Laugarholl (Kluka). This is a source consisting of a first swimming pool surrounded by stones but also, right next to it, a very small pool in the grass surrounded by stones about 50cm deep.</br></br >
The water temperature is around 42°C and the pool can accommodate 3 people. It is also possible to change clothes in the premises provided for the swimming pool.

Gvendarlaug

The <b>Drangsnes</b> spring is very easy to find since it is located in the heart of the village, along route 645 very close to the church.</br></br>
This is a series of 3 small swimming pools with a temperature of 40°C</br></br>

Drangsnes

<b>Holsgerðislaug</b> is located at the bottom of the Eyjafjörður valley. To get there you have to go south on the 821 to the Tortufell farm, then take the F821.</br></br>
The source is located near the cabin, 200m from the road in the middle of the grass. The pool measures approximately 8-9m² and is approximately 50cm deep. </br></br>
The water temperature is around 40°C.

Holsgerðislaug

<b>Laugarfellslaug</b> is located northeast of Snaefell mountain. You need to drive south on the F910, then follow a small track east along the Laugara River (there is a sign for Laugarfell here).</br></br>
From here it only remains about 2 km to reach the Laugarfellsskali hut. It is possible to change in the cabin.</br></br>
The temperature of the small natural swimming pool surrounded by stone is approximately 34°C and the size of the pool is approximately 4m in diameter with a depth of 70cm.

Laugarfellslaug

<b>Hrunalaug</b> is located a few kilometers after Fluðir. You have to drive along route 344 to the church, then take 345.</br></br>
After about 300m, there is a parking lot, from which a 5-minute walk takes you to the hotpot.</br></br>
The source is in front of an old turf house (which allows you to change clothes). Approximately 50cm deep and with a temperature of approximately 38°C, the hotpot can accommodate 4 people maximum.

Hrunalaug

<p>The F35 track, the famous “Kjölur”, is the one that takes you North from the Golden Circle region, but it also takes you to a unique nature reserve: Hveravellir.</p>
<p>Completely isolated about halfway across the 200 kilometer stretch of the F35 trail, Hveravellir is like a geothermal oasis in the middle of the <a title="Kjölur" href="/guide/highlands/kjolur-f35" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kjölur</a> Desert.</p>

<h2 id="hveravellir-aller">How to get to this remote oasis in the heart of the highlands</h2>

<p>Located between two glaciers, <a title="Langjökull glacier" href="/guide/highlands/langjokull" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Langjökull</a> and Hofsjökull, Hveravellir is your rest and relaxation pit stop when off-road driving across the highlands of Iceland. Hveravellir is technically accessible to conventional vehicles, but a 4x4 vehicle is still highly recommended driving on the F35 as there have been in accidents in places.</p>
<p>The F35 is often used by tourists who want to reach North Iceland from the Golden Circle. This trail serves some great destinations like  <a title="The Kerlingarfjoll mountains" href="/guide/highlands/kerlingarfjoll" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kerlingarfjoll</a> and, of course, Hveravellir. <p>Wooden footbridges basically lay out a path for you to stay on track and avoid walking through the mud, so you don't damage the site's very fragile soil. This tour is truly like stepping onto another planet, with incredibly vivid colours reminiscent of <a title="Krysuvik" href="/guide/west/reykjanes/krysuvik-seltun" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Krysuvik</a>, <a title="Geysir" href="/guide/west/goldencircle/geysir" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Geysir</a>, and <a title="Hverir" href="/guide/north/myvatn/hverir-namafjall" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hverir</a>.</p>

<p>This remote spa resort is a perfect place to rest your travel-weary bones and bask in 38° water. There are hiking trails nearby to reach the Langjökull glacier or even Rjupnafell, Thjofadalir, and Jökulkrok.</p>
<p>You can also take longer hikes to Lake Hvitarvatn for example, or take the magnificent trail that goes around the Langjökull glacier to the Hallmundarhraun lava fields and finally to Husafell. And if you don't feel like walking, you can even explore the region on horseback along dedicated horse riding trails.</p>
<h2 id="hveravellir-dormir">Accommodation at Hveravellir</h2>
<p>Even though most travelers are only just passing through Hveravellir for a few hours on the way to Kjölur, you can (and should!) stay overnight.</p>
<p>Two establishments are available for accommodation in Hveravellir itself: one has 33 rooms with Sleeping Bag Accommodation, while the other can accommodate 20 people in 3 separate rooms.</p>

The Hveravellir Hot Springs

<p>Lost in the heart of Iceland, Kerlingarfjöll, literally: “<em>the mountains of the good woman</em>”, is a very active geothermal site.</p>
<p>It is a remote mountain range in central Iceland that offers unforgettable hikes.</p>
<p>The highest point in this mountain range is Mount Snaekollur (1488 m). Kerlingarfjöll is part of the rift zone in the Atlantic Ridge that crosses Iceland from south-east to north-west and belongs to a volcanic network that stretches 100 km².</p>

<h2 id="quest-ce-que-kerlingarfjoll">Kerlingarfjöll: one of the most beautiful sites in Iceland</h2>

<p>The particularity of Kerlingarfjöll is the orange color of its flanks, which comes from the rhyolitic stone that makes up the vast majority of this mountain.</p>
<p>Not being located along Road number 1, you won't find that many tourists in Kerlingarfjoll, yet it is one of the two or three most beautiful sites in the country. Any visitor who goes to Kerlingarfjöll is struck by the chromatic harmony, almost a painted composition with the flame-coloured mountains contrasted by the snow, especially on a clear day.</p>
<p>Like <a title="Landmannalaugar region" href="/guide/highlands/landmannalaugar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Landmannalaugar region</a>, the Kerlingarfjöll region is renowned for its incredible landscapes and panoramas and is a must for all hiking enthusiasts.</p>
<h2 id="comment-aller-a-kerlingarfjoll">How to get to Kerlingarfjöll?</h2>

<p>Though it is possible to reach Kerlingarfjöll via the F347 east and the F26, the easiest and most convenient way to get there is to get there from the south or from the north via <a title="The Kjölur Trail, the 35" href="/guide/highlands/kjolur-f35" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Kjölur trail: number 35</a>. Generally, after spending the night near the Golden Circle, visitors leave the next morning to visit the Kerlingarfjöll Mountains, as the Golden Circle connects to off-road trail 35.</p>
<h3>4x4 journey via Trail 35, then F347</h3>

<p>Starting from Gullfoss, take the Kjölur red stone road for about an hour until the next junction, driving past the beautiful Hvitarvatn lake. It's a bumpy ride, very much so in fact, with deserted landscapes that bring to mind the red planet Mars.</p>
<p>From the crossroads mentioned above you have two options: continue straight on the 35 towards Blonduos via <a title="The oasis of Hveravellir" href="/guide/highlands/hveravellir" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the oasis of Hveravellir</a> for about 30 km from here, or branch off onto the F347. The F347 track is now in much better condition than it used to be and above all, there is no need to cross a ford anymore. After a short quarter of an hour on the trail (10 km), you will see Gýgjarfoss, a small waterfall that is worth at least a quick stop.</p>
<p>A few kilometers away, you'll find the first car park for the Kerlingarfjöll site, complete with chalets and a sign leading to Asgarðsfjall.</p>
<p>In the end, the track that leads to Kerlingarfjöll is quite easy and although you'll need a 4x4 vehicle (for the off-road trail F347), it's not a particularly challenging drive.</p>
<h3>By bus</h3>
<p>The site is also accessible by bus. Indeed, SBA line 610 takes you from the capital via Gullfoss, Kjolur and Kerlingarfjöll to finally reach Akureyri.</p>

<h3>Where to park?</h3>
<p>In fact, there are two parking lots in Kerlingarfjöll where you can park and strike out on foot for the hiking trail. Look for the green and red huts easily recognized from afar which point you to the main car park, the location named Neðri-Hveradalir.</p>
<p>The second car park is slightly higher up the trail. Pass the huts for about 4.5 km on the bumpy track to the small car park at the Kastali hut.</p>
<p>The choice of parking depends on your hiking skills and what you plan to do (see below). Neðri-Hveradalir is the main car park from which the majority of hikers leave.</p>

<p>As soon as you arrive on site, you'll realize the place is big, in fact immense and worth every drop of sweat as it is truly magnificent, the color contrasts simply magical. The flaming orange-yellow rhyolite hills contrast with the bright green grass and white streaks of snow, add to that the fumaroles and solfatars, with all around you the pungent smell of sulfur, and you have one of the most magical places in Iceland.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most impressive thing is when you get a sense of scale seeing the size of the hikers in the distance walkers compared to the majestic mountains. If you have the chance to visit with good weather, the sunlight hitting the orange flanks is a spectacle unlike any other.</p>

<p>There are so many hiking trails in Kerlingarfjöll, almost twenty. Some will take you on a complete ascent of the Fannborg and Snaekollur mountains, with a splendid view of all of Central Iceland from the peak.</p>
<p>The map of possible hiking trails is posted in the image above. Depending on the car park you choose (Neðri-Hveradalir or the Kastali hut), the site offers enough hiking options for every taste.</p>
<p>You are sure to find exactly what you want, from a 1-hour leisurely hike to a full 3-day marathon! <h3>The Hveradalir hike</h3>

<p>The best known hike in Kerlingarfjöll is without a doubt the <strong>Hveradalir</strong> trail and we highly recommend it. This hike is <a title="Hveradalir hike" href="/guide/highlands/hveradalir-kerlingarfjoll" target="_blank" rel="noopener">detailed in our dedicated article about this hike</a>. Its 6.5 km will take you at least 2 hours to reach the Hveradalir site (one way only) with a significant elevation factor. This hike starts from the main car park in Neðri-Hveradalir and offers absolutely breathtaking landscapes!</p>
<h3>The Austurfjöll hike</h3>
<p>This walk starts from the Kastali hut, the second parking lot, and takes you to the steep slopes of Lodmundur and Fannborg. The ascent continues until you reach the summit of Snaekollur at 1428 m. The walk is 7 km long, and you have to count 5h30 to complete the whole loop.</p>
<h3>Swim in a hot spring!</h3>
<p>As promised, this is your reward for all the effort. Kerlingarfjöll is an important geothermal area, and this often means hot springs nearby.</p>
<p>Very close to the campsite, hike up the Hveradalir for less than 1 km to find a gorgeous stone pond.</p>
<p>A sign indicates a hotpot just to the left in the Asgarður Gorge. The pool can accommodate a dozen people and the water temperature is approximately 36-38 °C.</p>

<p>Summer between mid-June and early September is the ideal period.</p>
<p>As strange as it may seem, the site is open all year round in winter and summer. Although it is clearly in summer that the contrasts and colors of the place exude the most magic, some visitors go there outside of summer for a bit of peace and quiet.</p>
<p>However, you should know that in winter, the site is very difficult to get to or even impossible and generally, from October to May, the region is covered in snow.</p>
<h2 id="ou-dormir-a-kerlingarfjoll">Sleep in Kerlingarfjöll</h2>

<p>Neðri-Hveradalir, with the red and green huts mentioned previously, is next to the Kerlingarfjöll Mountains camp site, which has its official website <strong>http://www.kerlingarfjoll.is</strong>. It is the only place to sleep in the entire region.</p>
<p>The place is very well-equipped and has a restaurant that serves breakfast, as well as a building with an equipped kitchen.</p>
<p>Recently, the site has expanded to include a new building with no less than 20 double rooms with very modern private bathrooms. In addition, there are also 10 small independent chalets, and another chalet where you can lay out your sleeping bag for a budget option.</p>
<p>Very close to the huts, you can even to pitch your tent on a large camping ground. A former ski resort  dating back to 1991, only the chalets remain open today.</p>
<p>The place is very popular, obviously since it is the only place to sleep for miles in every direction, so you'll need to book as early as humanly possible.</p>

<p>The Kerlingarfjöll site is most definitely remote, requiring quite the expedition to ge there, but it really a little slice of paradise that offers absolutely incredible view you won't see anywhere else.</p>
<p>There are so many absolutely stunning hiking trails that it would be a shame not to go there. Being located along Route 35, it is also a convenient mid-point on any journey from the south to the north, such as visitors leaving the Golden Circle to go to Lake Myvatn or Akureyri.</p>

<p>Askja is a volcano located in the center of the Ódáðahraun lava desert at an altitude of 1515 meters and which, at 3000 km², is the largest lava field in the world. The site is part of the extensive <a title="Vatnajokull" href="/guide/south/vatnajokull" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vatnajokull</a> National Park.</p>
<p>The Askja caldera, as we know it today, was formed 10,000 years ago due to, you guessed it, a major volcanic eruption, the most notable in 1875, and more recently in 1961.</p>
<p>The eruption of 1875 began in January that year and lasted for months. This eruption, in a series of explosions, created the small <em><strong>Vìti</strong></em> crater, known today for its turquoise water. Viti is in fact what's known as a maar: an explosive volcanic crater that sometimes becomes filled with water to create a lake.</p>
<p>After a few decades of peace and quiet, several small eruptions flared up in the early 20th century like warning signs before the major eruption of 1961. A new eruptive fissure tore open in the north-east of the caldera and was active for two months, unleashing no less than 100 million square meters of lava.</p>

<h2 id="askja-site">Askja: an exceptional site</h2>

<p>NASA's first moonwalkers came here to train, which says a lot about the region. This is an active volcanic zone and the caldera extends over 45 km². In Askja, there are two beautiful lakes:</p>

<p>The crater is home to a splendid crystalline blue lake, <strong>Öskjuvatn</strong> which is 217 m deep, and together with Jökulsarlon is one of the deepest lakes in the country.</p>

<p>Very close to Öskjuvatn lies <strong>Vìti</strong>, a crater with warm, milky waters. Unlike Öskjuvatn, its waters are pale green, and this contrast makes the place very photogenic.</p>
<p>Some tourists choose to climb down in to the crater to swim in its warm waters (25 to 28° regardless of the season). But take care on your way down into the heart of the crater, as the slope is very steep and the descent can be dangerous, so follow the guide's instructions.</p>
<p>On site, the contrast between Viti and Öskjuvatn is striking, and the site is a haven of peace and quiet, a truly magical place with that characteristic sulphur smell.</p>
<p>A typical hike in the Askja Caldera departs from the car park to reach Öskjuvatn, passing the small Vìti crater on the way. It takes 1.5 hours to 2 hours to complete the round trip.</p>
<h2 id="askja-aller">How to get there</h2>

<p>Askja is completely isolated, a remote location in the center of Iceland, far from any city and well off the main roads. Access to Askja requires an all-terrain vehicle (4x4) whether you are coming from the north or the east. The off-road trails are quite rough overall, so going to Askja takes time. It'll be a full day excursion including travel time from Road number 1 and a complete visit of the site. Altogether, driving time will be a full 5 hours for a return trip regardless of the track taken.</p>
<p>There are two ways to reach Askja:</p>
<ul>
<li>The F88</li>
<li>The F910</li>
</ul>
<p>The other alternative is to book a guided tour with a tour company (see below).</p>
<h3>Access via the F88</h3>

<p>The main access to the site is from the north, a few kilometers after Myvatn, but the F88 trail is a challenging one with fairly deep fords (about 60 cm or more) and areas of black sand. It is not the most popular track because the F910 is simply much more photogenic and the Lindaá ford can be very deep or even impossible to pass. This is the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river which runs to the <a title="Dettifoss" href="/guide/north/dettifoss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dettifoss</a> waterfall.</p>
<p>The F88 is accessible from Road number 1 and at first is rather monotonous despite the frequent bumpy “corrugated iron” sections for the first 45 minutes. We then arrive at the first ford, quite easy because shallow, while the Ódáðahraun river flows in the background.</p>
<p>It's only a few kilometers further that the going gets tough with the famous Lindaá ford. The ford is wide and a sign indicates that this ford can be complicated for standard 4x4s (SUV rentals as opposed to super jeeps). There is a depth gauge made up of a rope to indicate where the water level is the lowest on the ford.</p>
<p>After a swampy section, you finally approach to <a title="Herðubreið" href="/guide/north/herdubreid" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the imposing Herðubreið</a> which culminates at 1682 m, an extinct volcano that dominates this desert landscape with its plateau.</p>
<p>The trail then becomes a much more pleasant drive to Askja, with the vegetation giving way to the vast lava field.</p>
<p>It takes 2 hours to travel the 100 km between Road number 1 and Askja on the F88 trail.</p>
<h3>Access via the F910</h3>

<p>This trail, along with the F225 leading to Landmannalaugar, is considered one of the most beautiful in the country. The F910 trail is a 115 km stretch of desert ash, sand, and breathtaking landscapes.</p>
<p>On the road, the flora is almost non-existent and the landscape is like another planet entirely. Starting from the last villages near Lake Lagarfljót, make sure to fill up the fuel tank since there are no service stations on the road leading to Askja.</p>
<p>Many tourists stay overnight in the very famous guesthouse in <strong>Adalbol</strong>. In addition to being the closest to Askja, the hosts are particularly welcoming.</p>
<p>It takes about ten minutes to get from Adalbol to <strong>Bru</strong>, but the next 25 km to reach the junction with trail 905 are a bit more difficult, the road surface uneven and a great deal of sand, which can affect vehicle traction (photo). The landscape is extraordinary with a few rare fords glimmering in the Ódáðahraun Desert.</p>
<p>After a few kilometers south on the 910 you'll reach 2 fords which are generally quite easy (30 cm to 40 cm deep at most).</p>
<p>These 2 fords are the big ones you need to cross to reach Askja from the east. Then the trail gets even more difficult, with rough terrain such that the last kilometers to reach Askja can seem endless. The sand gives way to a very rocky track and the vehicle speed can hardly exceed 30 km/h.</p>
<p>Ultimately it takes 2.5 hours to get to the Drekagil campsite from Adalbol, and this counts the time you need to admire these unique panoramas , including the Herðubreið volcano, which rises to 1682 m and dominates the region.</p>

<p>We recommend you continue 8 km via the F894 to the Öskjuvatn car park to get a little closer. This will mean you only need to walk for 30 minutes (2 km) to reach the site, which is absolutely exceptional. A true jewel of Iceland!</p>
<p>Many tourists arrive from the east these days, through the <strong>Kárahnjúkar</strong> and <strong>Egilsstadir</strong> regions via the F910 trail. There are more fords to cross but they post no challenge (if you have to choose, take the right bank of the Jökulsà).</p>
<p>On the road you are likely to encounter meeting reindeer, which are rare but concentrated in this region of the island, so keep your camera handy to snap a shot of Rudolph.</p>
<h3>Askja in guided excursion mode</h3>

<p>Some tourists prefer organized day trips to avoid driving on these trails with their rental vehicles.</p>
<p>Tours with departures from Akureyri or even Myvatn are common. They will take you there either via 4x4 bus or a superjeep. Generally it's a full day excursion, total 12 hours for the trip there, the tour, and the return trip.</p>

Askja: our guide to visiting the famed volcano

<p>Iceland has hundreds of natural hot baths, and the Grettislaug hot spring is a favorite among travelers. The facilities are great, but what's incredible is the natural setting around you.</p>
<p>Grettislaug, literally "<em>Grettir's pool</em>", takes its name from “<em>Grettir the Strong</em>”, a bandit character in the sagas. Legend has it, the bandit Grettir went swimming to the island of Drangey, located 7.5 km from here, and when he got back warmed up in the hot water pool now called Grettislaug.</p>
<h2>Grettislaug: A great place to relax</h2>

<p>There are two pools called Grettislaug and Jarlslaug. Grettislaug is a reference to the Icelandic Sagas, but the other pool is named Jarlslaug after another important character, the owner of the premises: Jón Eiríksson.</p>
<p>Jón Eiríksson is a bit of a local legend and is considered the expert when it comes to the small island of Drangey located a few kilometers away. Jón owns the farm and the pools, which he built using the natural hot springs that have always flowed near the farm.</p>
<p>One of the two pools is oval, the other round. The oval is the largest and warmest, can accommodate 15 to 20 people at the same time, measuring about 4.5 meters long, 4 meters wide and 80 cm deep. The round pool is smaller and can only accommodate 5 to 6 people. The temperature in both pools is between 39 °C and 42 °C, and it's a delight to relax there.</p>
<p>The pools are surrounded by small stone walls, which provide some protection from the wind. It should be noted that there are no changing rooms on site, so you will have to change in the car or behind the stone walls with the wind in your hair.</p>

<p>Swimming will cost a fee, but there is a great alternative, as there is no fee for those who camp on site. The camping fee is 1.250 ISK per night per person. So if you're booked to camp out, swimming will therefore be unlimited and free for you.</p>
<p>For others, you will need 1,000 ISK for a session relaxing in the pools.</p>
<p>In those pools you can enjoy a view of the sea and Skagafjörður Bay, and being so remote it is much less touristy than other thermal resorts.</p>
<p>Bathing in Grettislaug really feels like swimming right on the edge of the world, a bit similar to <a title="Geosea" href="/guide/north/geosea-hotsprings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Geosea</a>, Hofsós, or Krossneslaug in the western fjords.</p>
<h2>How to get to Grettislaug</h2>

<p>The Grettislaug hot spring is really easy to find, even though a little far from the ring road. You'll have to exit Road 1 towards <a title="Skagi Peninsula" href="/guide/north/skagi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Skagi Peninsula</a> to reach this geothermal hidden gem located 18 km from Sauðárkrókur in the north of Iceland.</p>
<p>Just before arriving at Sauðárkrókur, keep your eyes peeled for a small dirt road, the 748. Road 748 is not paved but remains in fairly good condition, so a conventional passenger vehicle can get you there safely.</p>

The Grettislaug Hot Springs

<p>Myvatn Nature Bath, otherwise known as Jarðböðin, is a magnificent hot spring located in, you guessed it, the Myvatn region of northern Iceland...</p>
<p>Iceland is full of hot springs and Icelanders really know how to take full advantage of these places, whether it's natural hot rivers, geothermally-heated pools, or spa resorts like the Blue Lagoon.</p>
<p>Therefore, since 2004, there has also been another geothermal resort in the north of the island, very close to Lake Myvatn: Jarðböðin - Myvatn Nature Bath.</p>

<p>To see the midnight sun while soaking in mineral water at 38 °C (36 to 40°) in the middle of the lunar landscape of the Myvatn region is quite the experience. After 08:00PM, the spa is generally less crowded and whenever possible try to go there in the evening or in early morning for some quiet.</p>
<p>The lagoon itself is an artificial construction, the bottom layered with sand and gravel. This is spring water however, and its healing properties are unique in many ways. It is perfectly suited for swimming, because due to its chemical composition, unwanted bacteria and vegetation do not thrive in the lagoon thanks to these healing minerals.</p>
<p>Sulfur for example is considered to have a positive effect on asthma and other respiratory diseases, and countless mineral compounds in the water are known to provide relief for various skin problems.</p>

<p>In terms of amenities and access, it's just like any traditional pool. You go in first through the changing rooms, which are very clean and modern, and take your mandatory shower on the way to the pool.</p>
<p>As is the case at the Blue Lagoon, there's a bar and a coffee shop for food and drink. The Kvika Cafe is quite large and can accommodate up to 120 people with a charming outdoor section and a menu of classic sandwiches, soups, salads and various desserts.</p>
<p>There are also two saunas for the real spa-enthusiasts, with a temperature of 50°. They were freshly renovated in 2019 and now have a view of the misty lagoon itself!</p>

<p>One of the main assets of Jarðböðin is its location. Indeed, visitors particularly appreciate this place to relax after a long day of walks around Lake Myvatn with its countless hiking trails.</p>

<p>Jarðböðin is very well indicated on the road, and is located just 5 km from Reykjahlíð. Take Road number 1 and just after the exit for Road 860 that leads east to Grotagja, keep an eye out for a small road on the right allows you to reach the nature bath.</p>

<p>The hot water waterfall of Laugarvellir is one of the hidden gems of eastern Iceland. The country has an incredible number of hot springs, but Laugarvellir is among the most famous, because while a hot pool sounds impressive, a hot waterfall sounds just divine.</p>

<p>Laugarvellir's hot spring is located 100 km from the town of Egilsstaðir in central east Iceland. From Egilsstaðir you drive west along <a title=" Lögurinn lake" href="/guide/east/lagarfljot-logurinn-lake" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lögurinn lake</a> via the 931 to reach Laugarvellir.</p>
<p>The road connects with the 910 heading towards central Iceland, Mount Snaefell, and the famous Kárahnjúkar Dam. Stay on this road until you reach the expansive man-made lake named Hálslón and pass the dam. When you leave the Hálslón dam, Road 910 becomes off-road trail F910 and is no longer paved.</p>

<p>Keep going for 7.5 km precisely when you'll see an intersection where you have to turn left.</p>
<p>The intersection is marked with a cross on the map above. You shouldn't have trouble finding it, look for signs indicating “<em>Hafrahvammgljúfur</em>” going eastbut you will be taking the other direction, west, for 2 km until you reach the hot spring.</p>
<p>The trail climbs a small hill with on the other side a river and parking lot. Years back, you could cross the river by car (a ford about 30 cm deep), but this has since been forbidden, so just take the footbridge across.</p>

<p>From the car park and small wooden footbridge, walk along a small path about 600 meters to the waterfall, which you'll be seeing from the top.</p>
<p>Laugarvellir is rarely crowded, and the car park is often empty, even in summer, as the site is rather isolated and far from traditional tourist routes.</p>
<p>In winter, the site is accessible up to the dam, most of the time, before the 910 turns into the F910. So to reach Laugarvellir visitors will have to leave their vehicle and walk the F trail on foot.</p>
<p>Laugarvellir best in the summer and you'll need a 4x4 vehicle to handle the F trail which is forbidden to conventional vehicles.</p>

<p>Near the car park, you'll find a cabin with a sign with some local facts. The site was inhabited until the beginning of the last century, which may seem surprising for somewhere so remote. A couple of farmers attempted to settle there in 1900 but only stayed for a few years, until 1906 most of their sheep flock died in a storm.</p>
<p>The region is hostile to say the least and there is nothing for miles around, the area is truly deserted except for this oasis.</p>
<p>From the car park you'll start to see the vegetation, the bright green moss carpet, and steam from the hot springs rising over the horizon. Not far there is a wooden cabin with changing rooms so you can get ready before going down to the hot spring.</p>

<p>The first thing you see is a river, but this one is cold, keep going until you find the pool with the waterfall flowing without much power, but still enough for a spa experience!</p>
<p>Check the temperature of the water under the waterfall, as this is not a regulated temperature, it can get very hot, going just above 40 °C. The waterfall flows into a basin floored with large stones, totalling about 20 m² and 50 cm deep.</p>
<p>Downstream, two other pools with a slightly cooler temperature can give you that hot/cold nordic spa experience. This difference is due to the cold stream that mixes with the hot spring, and it can get icy! Tourists love to dip in the cold after warming up in the hot thermal waters of Laugarvellir.</p>

<p>The other two pools are also large enough to accommodate quite a few people and their temperature varies between 32 and 38 °C.</p>
<p>The Laugarvellir hot spring is a small corner of paradise, truly remote, quiet and peaceful, such that you'll never want to leave... The place is often deserted, but if you want to make sure to be alone in Laugarvellir, go there in the mid-morning or in the evening, and skip the midday rush.</p>

<p>Seljavallalaug is one of the best swim spots in Iceland, a magical hot tub in the wild nestled between two mountains which is the last place you'd expect to find a pool!</p>
<p>Iceland is full of hot springs, each more pleasant than the last: the hot water rivers as in Reykadalur, the full-scale spa resorts like the Blue Lagoon, Myvatn Nature Bath or the Secret Lagoon, and sometimes pools built in a remote natural environment that seems like an oasis in the lunar landscape. This is the case of Seljavallalaug.</p>

<p>There are almost too many geothermally-heated swimming spots scattered all over this icy island (see <a href="/maps/iceland-hotsprings-map" target="_blank" rel="noopener">our hot springs map</a>) and Seljavallalaug is one of the most interesting. It's located very close to the famous Skógafoss waterfall, so you'll have to go off the beaten track of Road number 1.</p>

<p>To get there, when driving on Road number 1 in the direction of Skogafoss, turn left on Roaf 242 towards Raufarfell.</p>

<p>The road will take you straight to the Seljavellir swimming pool where you can park your car. But this is not your destination, this is a standard swimming pool. To get to the secret pool in its wild and natural setting, you'll have to put in a little effort!</p>
<p>If you look around you'll see you're on a mountain flank with the infamous Eyjafjallajökull rising in the distance. From the car park, head due north up the mountain for just under 20 minutes to reach the Seljavallalaug pool.</p>
<p>This walk is a breeze despite the wild rocky landscape, all you have to do is keep the river on your left side until you reach the basin. You can't really mess it up, there's only one path, and it leads straight to the secret pool.</p>
<p>You will however need to cross a stream on foot at some point. A small wooden bridge makes this fairly easy most of the time without getting your feet wet. But when the snow melts in late winter, the small bridge can become partially submerged and you'll have to get your feet wet.</p>
<h2 id="seljavallalaug-piscine">Seljavallalaug: the Oldest Swimming Pool in the Country</h2>

<p>Seljavallalaug was built in a record-breaking 2 days of construction in 1923, making it the oldest swimming pool in the country. This remote location in such a wild setting makes it quite the legendary experience for many travelers.</p>
<p>Interestingly, until 1936 the Seljavallalaug swimming pool was the largest ever built in the country. It was originally intended as a kiddie pool to teach children how to swim, then quickly the locals got into the habit of coming to swim there with the whole family.</p>
<p>In 2010, the eruption of the nearby Eyjafjallajökull rained ash onto the site, making the pool a toxic mess until the following summer. A group of dedicated volunteers took up the challenge to clean and restore this prized local family favourite. It remains very well maintained by locals and access is free.</p>
<p>The pool is 28 meters long by 10 wide and next door there is a small cabin where you can change. The water is around 36 °C and the basin is fed by the hot spring that flows along <a title="Eyjafjöll (Eyjafjallajökull)" href="/guide/south/eyjafjallajokull" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eyjafjallajökull</a>, the famous volcano, so you'll be bathing in the heat of that infamous dragon.</p>
<p>The place is open all year round, being free and unstaffed, but sometimes difficult to access in winter due to snow. In summer, your best bet is early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the crowd, as it's increasingly well-known and tourists love it. Seljavallalaug has become a must-see when visiting the south of the island in recent years.</p>
<p>Swimming there is just a fantastic experience, and many locals get together in its waters after a long day to unwind with friends and family.</p>

<p>The hot water river in the Reykadalur Valley is one of the most magical hot springs in Iceland, but you'll have to hike to get there...</p>
<p>In the south of Iceland, about forty kilometers from the capital Reykjavík, lies the city of Hveragerði, which means "<em>hot gardens"</em> in Icelandic. This place is known in particular for its hot springs, nourished by the Hengill volcano, but the real prize is the scenic hiking trail that leads to a hot water river.</p>
<p>Reykadalur is a valley in which lies the small town of Hveragerði and its springs. These hot springs mean <a title="Hveragerði" href="/guide/south/hveragerdi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hveragerði</a> can grow fruits and vegetables in greenhouses, such as tomatoes and even bananas.</p>

<p>Located about 50 km from the capital Reykjavík, Hveragerði is just a 45-minute drive away via Road number 1. Once in the town, head 2 km north of <a title="Hveragerði" href="/guide/south/hveragerdi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hveragerði</a>, past the soccer field, to find a car park and the departure point for the hike. The hiking trail curves left until you finally see the column of steam rising from the mountains.</p>
<p>The parking lot can get quite crowded, so cars sometimes park on the side of the small road. You may have to park several hundred meters from the car park itself, especially in summer.</p>
<p>This is why it is best to go there early in the morning or even in the evening in summer to avoid tourists.</p>
<p>From the car park just follow the sign indicating “Reykadalur hotspring” 3 km away. The trail leads to a place called Klambragil with all the amenities for swimming around the <strong>Reykadalsa</strong> hot water river.</p>

<p>The swim spot is accessible in winter and summer, but that being said, the climb can be quite tricky in bad weather. When the ground gets muddy and slippery, it may be better to wait for a better day to attempt it.</p>
<p>The advantage of going there outside the summer period is of course the peace and quiet compared to July or August. And there is something quite special about swimming in water at 38 °C in the open air in a snow-covered landscape!</p>
<p>Keep in mind that n winter, the estimated hiking time (see below) will probably be longer due to the difficulty.</p>

<h3>The hike</h3>
<p>The hike starts at the car park and can get quite steep for about 45 minutes as you work your way up a small dirt road. You'll see the beautiful <strong>Djúpagilsfoss</strong> waterfall on the left before you reach a plateau with a splendid view of Hveragerði and the sea on a clear day.</p>
<p>The <strong>Djúpagil</strong> canyon on the way is also magnificent and definitely worth a stop.</p>
<p>It takes 30 minutes from this point to reach the hot springs, but from the plateau perched in the middle of the green hills you can already start to see smoke rising with the smell of sulfur on the air. Welcome to the <strong>Reykadalsa hot water river</strong>.</p>
<p>The contrasts are striking in this place, a patchwork of color, with the lush vegetation in these geothermal regions clashing with volcanic rock and the bright orange rocks colored by bacteria.</p>
<p>Mudpots and other solfatars begin to appear on the side of the road, some of which reach temperatures of 100 degrees, so follow the instructions on the signs and no swimming!</p>
<h3>The swim</h3>
<p>After about an hour and 15 minutes of walking from the car park, you arrive in <strong>Klambragil</strong>. The place is often very busy in summer as this is the main attraction, but there is plenty of room for you to swim in the river (about 38°).</p>
<p>The site is very well laid out. Wooden docks follow the river for several hundred meters as well as wooden changing rooms.</p>
<p>The area is organised into small independent pools with rocks stacked to separate them, and it's a great experience. And interestingly the higher upstream you go, the hotter the water, so you can really find the perfect temperature for everyone!</p>
<p>It's such a great experience, most visitors stay a good hour enjoying the relaxing hot current after a good walk. The return is easier and almost all downhill so it only takes about an hour to reach the car park via the same 3.5 km route.</p>
<h3>The hike back to the car park</h3>
<p>You can choose to continue the hike with <strong>the Ölkelduhnúkur</strong> loop which adds about 3.5 km of hiking to discover a multitude of geothermal phenomena, each more surprising than the next.</p>
<p>You can book <a title="Horseback riding to the hot springs" href="https://guidetoiceland.is/book-holiday-trips/05a-the-hot-springs-tour?a=99162" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">horseback riding tours to these hot springs</a> during the summer (May to September) which is a great way to combine two very traditional local activities.</p>
<p>You can even enjoy a tasty meal or drink at <a title="Dalakaffi" href="http://dalakaffi.is/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dalakaffi</a> right at the parking lot.</p>
<p>So the total is about 2 to 2.5 hours to complete the return trip for a total of 7 km at an easy pace. There's significant elevation on the way there but overall the hike is quite easy and accessible to everyone, so it's a great option for families!</p>

<p>Iceland is full of hot springs as the island's geothermal activity is a source of boundless thermal energy.</p>
<p>For centuries, the Húsavík region in northern Iceland has been the country's hotspot for geothermal heat and hot springs.</p>
<p>Residents rely on geothermally-heated water for their domestic needs, which is a great deal in terms of energy cost. A borehole at Húsavíkurhöfði last century allowed the discovery of not a hot springwater, but heated seawater too rich in minerals to be suitable for use such as heating homes.</p>

<p><strong>GeoSea</strong> is a geothermal complex inspired by the hot spring resorts that Iceland loves so much. GeoSea seawater therefore comes from two boreholes, one located near the Húsavíkurhöfði reserve and the other near the port of Húsavík.</p>
<p>Unlike the vast majority of <a title="Iceland hot springs" href="/maps/iceland-hotsprings-map" target="_blank" rel="noopener">other hot springs in Iceland</a>, this is warm seawater, but it still has many health benefits for everyone to enjoy.</p>
<p>In fact, this water is known to soften the skin and has therapeutic properties that can provide much-needed relief to people suffering from skin conditions such as psoriasis. The water temperature is generally between 38 and 39 °C.</p>
<p>The water is untreated and completely natural. The constant flow of water from one basin to another due to the sea's tidal movement guarantees the seawater never remains stagnant, and is perfectly in line with local health regulations.</p>
<p>The pools facing the sea are a real treat as you can admire the mountain range to the west and Skjalfandi Bay and the Arctic Circle on the horizon: an incredible panorama you won't soon forget.</p>

<p>GeoSea is pretty easy to find. Located at the northern end of the city, GeoSea was established at the foot of the bright yellow Húsavíkurviti lighthouse.</p>
<p>To reach the spa from <a title="Husavik" href="/guide/north/husavik" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Husavik</a>, take Road 85 and cross the city center of Husavik and then turn left 150 m after the beautiful church heading towards Höfðavegur street, which leads to the seaside. From here you will see signs to help you find it, and it won't be long as the pools are less than 1 km from the city center.</p>
<p>A fairly large car park is located just outside.</p>
<h2 id="geosea-pratique">Rates and opening hours</h2>

<p>At GeoSea there are several infinity pools, all connected to each other and large enough to accommodate about fifteen people each. The pools perched on the cliff have a clear view straight out into the Norwegian Sea.</p>
<p>These are very recent and look decidedly modern with their rounded shape.</p>
<p>As in other complexes like this one, after entry, you will go through the changing rooms and showers to reach the pools. The changing rooms offer closed lockers and there is enough space altogether to accommodate 160 people. GeoSea provides shampoo and soap and you can also rent towels and bathrobes.</p>
<p>Inside the complex, there is plenty to eat: on site you will find a fairly well-known restaurant and a bar that offers craft beers.</p>

<p>Iceland is widely known for its hot springs, a blessing from the island's major geothermal activity.</p>
<p>The Vök Baths rely on geothermal energy from the Egilsstaðir region in eastern Iceland to provide visitors with an unforgettable spa experience.</p>
<p>The eastern region of Iceland doesn't have as many hot springs as the rest of the island, and this is one of the reasons for the appeal of the Vök Baths, which opened in summer 2019. Located on Lake Urriðavatn, northwest of Egilsstaðir, the Vök Baths offer the first floating pools in Iceland.</p>

<p>Like the <a title="Secret Lagoon" href="/guide/west/goldencircle/secret-lagoon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Secret Lagoon</a> near Fluðir, <a title="Myvatn Nature Baths" href="/guide/north/myvatn/myvatn-nature-baths" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Myvatn Nature Baths</a>, or the famous <a title="Blue Lagoon" href="/guide/west/reykjanes/blue-lagoon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blue Lagoon</a>, <a title="Vök Baths" href="https://vok-baths.is/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Vök Baths</a> has become one <a title="The best hot springs in the country" href="/maps/iceland-hotsprings-map" target="_blank" rel="noopener">of the best hot springs in the country</a>.</p>
<p>The concept is very recent, a modern take on the outdoor spa, and was designed by the same architect who built the Blue Lagoon. The prime location of this geothermal resort in the heart of the crystal waters of Lake Urriðavatn makes it one of the most pleasant springs in the country.</p>
<p>About ten years ago, natural hot springs were discovered in Lake Urriðavatn when locals noticed that the snow did not cover the entire lake. A bit of research determined that hot springs gush hot water into the depths of the lake, with temperatures recorded around 75°.</p>
<p>In Iceland, when you see water that has not frozen in winter, there's a very good chance the explanation is a hot spring under water. Named “vök” by the Icelanders, the spa became the “Vök Baths”.</p>
<p>The Vök baths have a special feature that many will appreciate. Unlike most hot springs in Iceland where the stink of sulfur hangs everywhere, Vök is the exception, and even offers the only drinkable natural hot water in Iceland! You can indeed drink the spring water of Lake Urriðavatn, it is pure enough to be certified potable.</p>
<h2 id="vok-aller">How to get there</h2>

<p>Located in eastern Iceland, right at the entrance to the Eastern Fjords, the Vök Baths are located 5 km north-east of Egilsstaðir. They are fairly easy to find and quite well indicated. In fact, starting from Egilsstaðir and heading north on the Ring road towards Akureyri, just stay on the road for just over 4 km after the town before turning right on 925, and you'll be there after a few hundred meters.</p>
<p>You can also get there by <a title="busses" href="/plan/iceland-by-bus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bus</a> on line 56 that takes you from Akureyri to Egilsstadir.</p>
<h2 id="vok-pratique">Amenities, rates, and opening hours</h2>

<p>There are currently 3 pools at Vök Baths, but more will be added. There is a sauna for spa amateurs, and you can even swim in the cold waters of the lake for a bracing dip before returning to the hot waters.</p>
<p>Two floating pools large enough to accommodate a good dozen people, and a very large pool is located just near the changing rooms, ensure you won't be fighting for space.</p>
<p>Like any other swimming establishment, you need to swing through the changing rooms and showers before you can get to the pools. Then take the large wooden footbridges to get around the resort and get into the floating pools. The pools are large enough to give you a bit of privacy with only a few people, and this is the best way to really enjoy the absolutely breathtaking view of the lake and the surroundings.</p>
<p>The hotel also offers a café restaurant with various local specialties, and a bar since the establishment has a partnership with a local microbrewery “Austri Brugghús” which offers excellent craft beers.</p>
<p>For tea lovers, visitors can try local herbal teas and the water comes from the lake itself. A complementary cup of infused herbs is included with the entrance to the spa.</p>

The Hot Springs of the Vök Baths

<p>The Krauma hot baths are located in the Borgarfjörður region near Reykholt in western Iceland.</p>
<p>This spa resort's waters come directly from the nearby Deildartunguhver hot spring. With its flow rate of 180 liters per second, Deildartunguhver is the most powerful hot spring in Europe and its waters reach a temperature close to boiling.</p>

<p>The Krauma thermal baths were built as recently as 2017 near the Deildartunguhver hot spring. This very modern complex offers no less than 6 pools (jacuzzis), of which are 5 hot water pools and one cold. The water is perfectly natural with no pool cleaning chemicals necessary, its purity ensured by the high rate of water recycling between the pools to keep it flowing and never stagnating.</p>
<p>The pools are small but numerous, so you can find a quiet spot away from other visitors. The temperature is ideal, around 38°, but varies from one pool to another. Swimming there is a dream, and you'll never want to get out of the water!</p>
<p>There are also 2 saunas and a superb relaxation room with a modern fireplace and soothing music.</p>
<p>The changing rooms are modern and well-equipped with lockers.</p>
<p>The complex also boasts a restaurant large enough to accommodate 70 people indoors and nearly 60 outside when the weather is nice. Many dishes are made from local produce, especially those grown in the greenhouses of Víðigerði. Some choice main course dishes are available such as lamb fillet, spicy Cajun salmon, homemade soups, and hamburgers.</p>

<h2 id="Deildartunguhver">Deildartunguhver Hot Spring</h2>

<p>Given the very high temperature of the water in the Deildartunguhver spring, it has to be cooled to ensure it's safe and pleasant for swimming. The waters are mixed with icy waters sourced from the Rauðsgil river which comes straight from the small Ok glacier nearby.</p>
<p>Very close to Krauma you can visit the famous Deildartunguhver hot spring. The water here reaches very high temperatures (97 °C), which is why small wooden walkways were set up, so you can get closer and observe without danger.</p>
<p>From here you will see the pipework leading to the two towns nearby: Borgarnes (34 km) and Akranes (64 km), which serves residents with hot water using geothermal energy. As is the case almost everywhere in Iceland, water coming out of the tap was heated by the earth itself.</p>
<p>Interestingly, the land where the hot spring is located has been owned by the same family for nearly 200 years. Sigurbjörg Björnsdóttir, who owned the land until 1984, was fully aware of the health benefits but also of the energy potential of these springs and knew how to capitalize on it.</p>
<p>The nearby Víðigerði, built in 1941, is a farming operation for tomatoes and other vegetables in greenhouses and relies on this energy, much like in <a title="Hveragerði" href="/guide/south/hveragerdi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hveragerði</a> in the south of Iceland.</p>
<h2 id="aller">How to get to Krauma</h2>

<p>Krauma Spa is located 97 km from Reykjavík and less than 30 minutes from Borgarnes (35 km). Getting to Krauma and its hot baths is very easy in summer and winter. Of course, the road conditions in winter are never a 100% guarantee, but the roads in the region are regularly well cleared.</p>
<p>When coming from Borgarnes or Reykjavík, follow Road number 1 north, then turn off on Road 50 towards Reykholt. This road it is in perfect condition and there are many signs to Deildartunguhver. As you arrive near the springs, signs indicate the entrance to the Krauma Baths.</p>

<p>Icelanders have learned from their long relationship to the sea that its waters release worries and give you their energy. <p>The main pool is very pleasant and 70 meters long and has a depth of about 1m20. As is often the case in Iceland, in hot baths, the average water temperature is around 38°.</p>
<p>Beyond the hot water pool, there is also a cold pool, a restaurant, a bar, the Sky Café and the Smakk Bar as well as a steam room and a sauna.</p>
<p>The Sky Lagoon offers a 7-stage spa experience called the “Sky Lagoon Ritual” which is quite simply to die for.</p>

<p>Often compared to its neighbor the Blue Lagoon, the Sky Lagoon has the advantage of being much closer to the capital, just 8 km away next to the port of Kopavogur, Karsnes.</p>

<p>Hvammsvík Bay was designed for a spa experience in the wild, with eight natural hot spring pools with varying temperatures. Ideally located facing the Atlantic Ocean, the Hvammsvík hot springs offer a unique experience where water from geothermal springs mixes with sea water. </p>
<p>The pools are pockets of hot water in the cold ocean and are therefore exposed to tides, so the water level varies depending on the time of day. This makes for a unique experience every time you visit.</p>
<p>The water in the pools is drawn from a spring located 1,400 meters underground and as it mixes with the cool Atlantic waters, averages temperatures that vary between 36°C and 42°C depending on the pool.</p>

<p>The pools are therefore a mixture of heated fresh water and cold salt water, which means no need for chemicals to keep the pools clean!</p>
<p>Many visitors enjoy this hot/cold combo, taking advantage of the sea water just a few meters away to cool off after a short soak in the hot pool. The panorama of the bay laid out before you as you relax in the pools is absolutely exceptional, with the ocean and mountains in the background.</p>

<p>The Hvammsvík Hot Springs are located near Reykjavík in the Mosfellsdalur Valley, just 45 minutes from the Icelandic capital.</p>
<p>The Mosfellsdalur plains are beautifully picturesque, and the valley leads streight to Hvalfjörður, the whale fjord, known for its famous <a title="Glymur Waterfall" href="/guide/west/glymur">Glymur Waterfall</a> located about 15 km to the east.</p>

<p>From Reykjavík, take the ring road northwards, then branch off on the smaller Road 47 just before the tunnel that leads to Akranes. The 47 runs along the coast of the whale fjord so keep driving with that stellar view for about fifteen kilometers.</p>

<p>Similar to numerous sites in Iceland, Laugarvatn is part of a geothermal zone where hot springs abound. For many years, these hot waters have been used for cooking, bathing, heating homes, and therapeutic steam baths, dating back to 1929.</p>
<p>Laugarvatn Fontana is a complex that provides access to hot springs, much like the nearby <a href="/guide/west/krauma">Krauma </a>and <a href="/guide/west/goldencircle/secret-lagoon">Secret Lagoon</a> (<a href="/experience/iceland-hotsprings-guide">For more information on the best hot springs in Iceland</a>). Here, you can immerse yourself in the healing properties of geothermal waters in their natural state.</p>
<p>These geothermal baths at Laugarvatn Fontana beautifully blend contemporary architecture and modern amenities while staying in harmony with nature. The site underwent a recent renovation in July 2011, with the design conceptualized by Icelandic architects.</p>

<p>The geothermal activity in the area played a significant role in Laugarvatn's history. Legend has it that in the year 1000 AD, during Iceland's conversion to Christianity, some prominent individuals preferred to be baptized in the warm springs by the shores of Lake Laugarvatn rather than in the icy waters of nearby Lake Thingvellir.</p>
<p>One of these springs, known as Vigdalaug, is located just 200 meters from Laugarvatn Fontana.</p>
<p>Centuries later, Iceland's last Catholic bishop, Jon Arason (born 1484 – died 1550), and his son, met their fate at the executioner's hand. Subsequently, their bodies were exhumed, washed in Vigdalaug, and reburied in Hólar, a former episcopal seat in northern Iceland.</p>

<p>At Laugarvatn, you'll find three modern steam baths known as "Gufan." The temperature can vary, depending on the hot spring and weather, generally falling between 40°C (104°F) and 50°C (122°F).</p>
<p>The humidity levels are quite high within the steam bath cabins. Floor grilles in the steam rooms allow you to experience the sounds and scents of the natural hot spring bubbling just below, creating a unique and natural sensory experience.</p>
<p>Near the steam baths you will find the "Ylur," a Finnish-style sauna with lower humidity compared to regular steam baths. It features a large window with scenic views of Lake Laugarvatn and maintains a temperature ranging from 80°C (176°F) to 90°C (194°F) and is somewhat dryer than a hammam.</p>

<p>Outdoors, there are three pools named "Lauga," "Saela," and "Viska," all interconnected, offering varying depths, sizes, and temperatures. Some areas are designed for relaxation, while others provide space for movement and fun.</p>
<p>Viska, for instance, is positioned slightly higher, providing panoramic views of the stunning lake surroundings.</p>
<p>Finally, the Fontana spa has direct access to Lake Laugarvatn and its beach through a gate. For the daring, this is a great opportunity for a refreshing swim.</p>
<p>Similar to other Nordic countries, Icelanders believe that cold baths have positive health effects, including enhanced blood circulation, muscle pain relief, and improved recovery. These benefits have also been demonstrated for individuals with arthritis and other joint conditions.</p>
